Is your AC leaking water? Here are some reasons for it

by Robert Morgan airzonehvac

If you live in a humid climate, then having an AC is a must. This is because the main job of the AC is to remove humidity from the air and then make it condensate or into water inside the air handler or Furnace in Ottawa. And the water collected here can usually drain out through a pipe.

However, certain malfunctions or buildup of sludge inside the system can block the drainpipe, thus, spilling the water inside your residence.

So, in this blog, we will provide you with some possible explanations of AC leaks. So, sit back and see if any of these problems match the one with your AC.

1- Condensate drain is plugged:

During hotter climates, when the warm air passes right above the evaporator coil, the chilled metal surface ends up accumulating water vapor on them. This water vapor ends up condensing over time inside the pan that is situated just below it.

Even though the condensate goes away, the deposits of fungus, dirt, or debris stay back, thus filling the drain. And this ends up hindering the draining process.

2- Evaporator pipe is broken:

If you are noticing drips instead of a massive puddle, then the chances are high that the water is splattering from the evaporator coil and not the condensate line. The main reason for this situation might be filthy coils. Or it might be due to the insulation holes around the coils that are redirecting the water.

That is why it is very important that you keep up with annual services to avoid such issues.

3- Frosted evaporator pipe:

There might be crystal formation on indoor coils, which are splashing on the floor after defrosting. If this is the problem, then proceed with turning off the AC to prevent it from damaging the compressor.

You will require adding a new filter to stop this issue. Or else the refrigerant might be running low. Call the professionals to know better.

4- Broken condensate pump:

Most ACs have a condensate pump to get rid of the water. This means, even if the drain is not blocked, the water will flow in the pan and drain out when the condensate pump is out of order.

So, see if the power is properly supplied to the pump or not. Or else, proceed to call the professional.

Bottom line

No matter which of the problems mentioned here is triggering the water leak in your AC, it is vital that you take the necessary step that is of calling a professional service provider to handle it.
