Is There A Minimum Age For Receiving Hair Transplantation?
by Andrew Martin Health ConsultantIn earlier times the hair loss was considered
as signs of ageing and due to lack of provisions of hair transplant at a
greater scale they were left with no much option. Nowadays, with increased
awareness and prevalence of hair loss at a younger age has made it a point of
concern. Including, hair loss at a younger age has become a global problem
affecting psychological status of sufferers with lowered self esteem and self
confidence.
The biggest culprit to cause hair loss is
genetics which leads to male pattern baldness but as growing hair loss
prevalence in present times focuses the environmental causes of hair loss which
could be contributing in addition to genetic influence. The contributing
factors favoring genetics in hair loss includes life style
changes, poor nutrition, pollution, usage of Hot tools ( Hair straightener,
hair curler), hot baths, stress, chemical straightening, hormonal change,
medications (anti depressants, anti anxiety and anti psychotics) and sleep
deprivation.
If
hair loss occurs at relatively younger age people often look for permanent
solution and come across hair transplantation procedure. But the major concern
while thinking of hair transplant at young age is “what is the minimum age to
get a hair transplant done”?
Ideally
there is no minimum age to get hair transplant done but many hair transplant
surgeons avoids hair transplant before 21 years of age due to multiple factors.
But in some cases after comprehensive analysis during primary consultations
when hair loss seems permanent and not progressive it can be performed even at
age of 21 years.
The
factors which usually halts the way of young individuals to get the hair
transplant too early includes:
1. Hair loss is often progressive in
young individuals: Male pattern baldness if occurs at
younger age is often progressive and if hair transplant performed too early might
lead to multiple sessions throughout the progressive phase of hair loss.
2. Unpredictable rate and extent of
hair loss: At a young age if hair loss occurs there
are high chances of faster rate of hair loss but the course of hair loss seems
very unpredictable. This could lead to appearance of bald area again at
different location on scalp after hair transplant. Hence, it is better to wait
and let the hair loss pattern to be quite stable and predictable.
3. Medical diagnosis can be missed if
any systemic diseases present: At a younger age there
are chances to miss any systemic disease associated with hair loss. There could
be masked or absent other symptoms related to the respective systemic disease
which might be visible at a later age.
4. Altering hormonal changes which
could lead to misdiagnosis: At a younger age hormonal changes
are more frequent and drastic which could lead to misdiagnosis of cause of hair
loss.
5. Alopecia areata:
It is an autoimmune condition characterized by patchy hair loss from any part
of the body mainly face and scalp. In this condition, hair transplant decision
is taken very judiciously as there are more chances of relapse and shedding of
transplanted hair follicles. Hair transplant in these cases are only performed
when the hair loss patch is stable for >3 years and there is no underlying
inflammation in scalp biopsy of respective area.
