Is the Summer the Best Time to Wash Your Bedding?
Those long summer days filled with sunlight may make you think of nothing more than soaking up some of the sun and catching a few rays. Yet, the summer can also be the perfect time to freshen up your home and specifically your bedding. With dry days filled with sunlight, your washable wool doona can dry well, and you can enjoy that beautiful scent of fresh air.
Should you wash wool?
One of the reasons you may have bought a wool doona may have been because they do not need a lot of care, and this is true. While you can wash a wool quilt from Halcyon Dreams, there is certainly no need to do so unless you want to.
Wool is naturally hygienic. It has been designed by nature to keep sheep dry and clean, and humans can benefit from this too while they are sleeping. It is antibacterial and antiallergenic, and it resists dust-mites and other pesky creatures from living within its fibres.
While you are sleeping, wool will wick away any additional moisture that is created, and it only releases this moisture once the environment is dry enough for it to do so. It also allows your skin to breathe naturally. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder many of us are choosing wool for our bedding.
Washing wool
Although wool doesn’t necessarily need washing, you may decide that you want to do so, and summer is the ideal time to do it. It could be that you fancy giving it a freshen-up or something may have been spilt. Whatever your reasons, make sure you follow the care instructions that came with your wool quilt.
As a general rule, wash your wool quilt on the wool setting on your washing machine. This is designed to be gentle. You should also use a detergent that is suitable for wool, but if you cannot find a wool-specific detergent, use non-biological.
Once your wool doona has gone through the cycle, it’s time to hang it outdoors in the sun and let it dry. As wool dries in layers, you want to leave it for as long as possible as it may feel dry on the outer layers yet still be wet inside. This is one of the reasons why summer is the ideal time to wash your quilt as the days are longer and warmer, creating perfect washing conditions. Finally, make your bed and look forward to a great night’s sleep.
