Geolocation is the identification or designation of the geographic location of an object, such as a mobile phone, a radar source, or a computer connected to the Internet. In this sense, IP geolocation can be defined as the method used to map a specific IP address to the geographic location from which a device connects to the Internet. How accurate is IP geolocation?

In the banking sector, user location is an integral part of the authentication process, which helps prevent money laundering, phishing attacks, and other security concerns. It also plays a key role in detecting fraud for online merchants, credit card providers, and online payment platforms.

Law enforcement uses IP location services to track financial transactions carried out by corrupt government officials, drug dealers and money launderers. Government agencies also use the service to monitor online transactions with terrorist associated groups or trade with banned countries.

Can a fake IP address be traced?

Since there are many ways in which users can use spoofed IP addresses, there is a bugging question as to whether they can still be tracked. Our answer is yes. Geolocation services boast access to vast databases that provide them with the information they need to find someone using IP addresses. However, their data sources include:

Regional Internet Registries (RIR)

These are large organizations tasked with the role of managing and controlling Internet access in various regions. The RIR is responsible for assigning and allocating IP addresses and registering domains. With the rapid growth of the Internet and the fact that every computer needs an IP to connect to the Internet, the demand for IP addresses has grown, forcing Reir to have child registries in different regions. Since the regional Internet registries are the custodians of IP addresses, they are the primary source of data for geolocation service providers.

Internet Service Providers (Internet Service Providers)

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can also be a data source for databases used by IP Geolocation Service Providers. Since ISPs know their IP addresses well, they sometimes exchange information with other online companies. Companies, in turn, can use statistical formulas and other advanced analytical tools to analyze the data collected by IPS as we conduct our normal online activities. Using this data, service providers can fine-tune their searches and get more accurate locations.

User submitted data is tied to IP addresses

In some cases, companies may accept anonymous data associated with specific IP addresses and use this information to populate their databases. This includes postal codes, cities, or any other information regarding your location that you provide when you buy something online. They may also look at other data sources where your IP address showed up before. For example, when you log into online weather websites and enter your zip code or city, the data is tied to your IP address as the request was made in real time.

IP parsing

This is a more advanced and sophisticated method where companies use traces, pings, and other methods to visit websites, read their information, and collect data that can help in identifying the geographic locations of IP addresses. The complexity of this technique makes it time consuming. It is difficult to map the routing infrastructure around the Internet given that there are millions, if not billions of addresses that are allocated, moved, or de-allocated every day.
