Instances of Indian Celebrity Raksha Bandhan

by chandan Kumar Digital Marketing Head
Raksha Bandhan is a very important Hindu festival that celebrates the special bond that exists between a brother and sister. In the Hindu society, Raksha Bandhan is a festival of paramount importance, and the cornerstone of this festival is one thing. The sister must tie an auspicious thread around the wrist of her brother to grant him protection from all sorts of evil and danger. This thread is the Rakhi. There are many mythological tales about the origin of Raksha Bandhan.

Some say that the festival of Raksha Bandhan has its roots in the Mahabharata. Lord Krishna was working in the fields when he cut his finger and it started to bleed. He did not have any cloth to stop the bleeding with. Draupadi immediately came to his aid and tore off a piece of her own saree which she tied around his finger.

Overcome by love and gratitude, Krishna declared Draupadi as his sister and promised to help her whenever she required any kind of assistance. Another very popular story is of Yama, the God of Death, and his sister the Yamuna. When Yama was made God of Death and sent to live and rule over Paatal, his sister the Yamuna wept because she would never see him again. She wept so much that the river Yamuna was born out of her tears.

The Gods in heaven were moved by her tears and made her Yamini, Goddess of the Night. She tied a Rakhi on her brother’s wrist and he granted her the gift of immortality. One of the major historical origin stories is the story of Princess Karnavati and Emperor Humayun. The Princess was the regent of the Rajput state of Bundi which was under attack from the Persian warlord Bahadur Shah.

As she was overcome by the enemy forces, she sent Emperor Humayun a letter for help along with a Rakhi, calling him her brother and asking for his help. The emperor was moved greatly and sent reinforcements immediately. Unfortunately, they were too late as by the time they arrived, the Princess and all the womenfolk of Bundi had committed suicide by Jauhar.
