Information on How to Change the Mileage on a Digital Odometer

by Andrew Richardson allenstewart

Unscrupulous and cunning dealers and sellers change the odometer. Know that any odometer can be replaced and altered, and digital ones are not ruled out. Tampering with a how to change the mileage on a digital odometer requires special equipment that leaves little proof. Smart fraudsters will either edit the numbers on the display or replace the memory chip with a chip that has fewer miles. Here are some ways they do it,

1- By deactivating the odometer

A fraudulent dealer may disable the odometer in an older vehicle to prevent a mileage reading because it uses a mechanical wire. They will remove the odometer on the instrument transmission or cluster and change the odometer reading. And, the vehicle stops measuring speed and the fuel gauge no longer works.

2 - Temporarily disconnecting the dash unit

It is very easy for unscrupulous sellers to disconnect the dash unit. According to some findings, if you unplug the entire dash of a certain vehicle, you can drive a high-end for several thousand miles without an odometer estimate.

And when you reinstall the dash unit, the odometer continues to read from the point when you removed the dash.

3 - Removal and replacement of mechanical

Also, a rookie can deduce the odometer reading only if the vehicle has a mechanical odometer. They simply move the odometer down, often with a ratchet inside the odometer to prevent it from reversing for falsification.

For a rookie to convert a digital odometer, they may have to deliver pulses with no direction. Sometimes, the mileage may just increase.

4 - Mileage correction tool in digital meter

Since manually replacing a digital odometer is difficult, a crook can use an online store-bought odometer correction tool. Typically, an odometer correction device costs at least around $200 or $300.

A mileage correction tool works on all vehicles, and they are connected through a diagnostic port. Thus, a digital meter can easily be tampered with by using easily available software.

5 – By replacing instrument cluster

Some fraudulent sellers may change the mileage by replacing the instrument cluster with a used instrument cluster. Mechanics in most repair shops take extra steps on vehicles with changed mileage. Note that in a legitimate repair shop, the current mileage will be entered into the database at each visit, thus, making it difficult to change the odometer mileage.

Crooks love to buy second-hand odometers from breakers and avoid dealing with auto repair shops that record mileage.
