India-USA Diplomatic Relations

Diplomats are representatives of another government in a foreign country. They act on behalf of such governments as spelt out on the duties of diplomats by the Geneva Convention. The diplomatic relations between India and the USA have seen heightened sense of strain in recent times especially in the aftermath of the short detention and release of Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade. Since the start of the standoff which was sparked off when Devyani Khobragade was detained by American authorities on grounds of false submission of visa and house maid salary payment issue.

India contends that as a diplomat Devyani Khobragade enjoys full immunity according to the Geneva Convention on diplomatic relations and the same should have been extended to her. The American State department claims she submitted false applications for her visa and was underpaying her house maid according to the American minimum wage mandated by the law. This issue has affected the relations of the American government and India with its insistence that since the matter has reached the justice department it cannot withdraw the case. This was pointed out by the US Attorney Preet Bharara that the case was now in the American legal system and needed exhausting its true legality.

Meanwhile Indian government has also issued strictures on the American diplomatic association (ACSA) undertaking some ungranted favors outside that given by their Indian Hosts. With directives to stop any commercial activities on the premises of the American Consulate. As the Devyani Khobragade hearing is set for 13th January 2014, India has pleaded to set aside these charges since she has been deputed to the United Nations. It remains to be seen whether the American government adheres to these passionate pleas and render conclusion to this case that has griped the nation's conscience.
