The process of filing the income tax return (ITR) is known as income tax filing. A taxpayer can file their ITR online on the e-portal of the government income tax department.
As per section 139(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, any individual whose total income in the financial year exceeds income tax exemption limit (Rs. 2.5 lakh for FY 19) is liable to file the income tax return.
Generally, the income tax return forms are notified in the first week of April, badly affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, the government extended the date for filing of Income-tax return for FY 2019-20 from 31st July, 2020 & 31st October, 2020 to 30th November, 2020 and Tax audit from 30th September, 2020 to 31st October,2020.
How to file income tax return online
The IT Department has released an e-filing software for all ITR forms, the ITR can be filed completely online without downloading any software in Excel or Java. After keeping the required documents ready, file tax returns completely online by following these steps:
Step 1: Login to
e-Filing website with User ID, Password, Date of Birth and enter the Captcha
code.
Step 2: Go to
e-File and click on “Upload Return”.
Step 3: Select
the appropriate ITR, Assessment Year and XML file previously saved in Part A
(using browse button).
Step 4: Upload
Digital Signature Certificate (DSC), if applicable.
Step 5: Please
ensure the DSC is registered with e-Filing.
Step 6: Click on
“Submit” button. On successful submission, ITR-V would be displayed (if DSC is
not used).
Step 7: Click on
the link and download the ITR-V. ITR-V will also be sent to the registered
email.
