In terms of numbers, Final Fantasy VI didn’t sell in the States.

One of my all time favorite role-playing games is Final Fantasy VI. For me that’s the best game in the series, by a considerable margin too. So it’s interesting to hear that Hironobu Sakaguchi is “mystified” as to the game’s newfound success on mobile.

As Sakaguchi says, “In terms of numbers, Final Fantasy VI didn’t sell in the States. It actually did very well in Japan. I’m mystified, because I see Americans are playing the mobile version. I think size of the characters really matters to an American audience, so from Final Fantasy VII onward, we used bigger characters. I think that’s why Final Fantasy VII took off. But I am kind of mystified by VI’s current popularity in the West, because Americans didn’t buy Final Fantasy VI back then.”

While I am not sure I agree with Sakaguchi’s reasoning on the size of the characters being an issue, it’s interesting to hear that Final Fantasy VI didn’t originally sell all that well in the West. This is because one of the long running gaming urban myths surrounding the game is that it actually did better in the West than in Japan.

It now seems that this is not the case.As to the reason behind the newfound success of the game, well turn-based games tend to map well to purely touch based devices and it is also a remarkably good game. Not to mention that considering the massive install base of mobile means that the increase in sales could simply be down to the fact it is now readily available on a more widely used platform. If you are also confused as to what Final Fantasy VI even is, then that’s because its original Western release had it numbered as Final Fantasy III.
