Journal of Consumer Research
A study in the Journal of Consumer Research showed that most people are most motivated to make efforts at oral hygiene because they want to improve the appearance of their teeth. If your teeth don't look good, it can make you hesitant to talk to other people, impairing your job performance. The same thing can happen with your social interactions.

Study Commissioned by Crest
Studies show you can improve the perception other people have of you by having whiter teeth. For example, one study was conducted by an independent research firm commissioned by Crest. The methodology of the study included simulated first dates, simulated job interviews, and a quantitative online survey. The results of the study were that 58% of the study participants were more likely to be hired and 53% received larger salary offers when their teeth had been whitened. After teeth whitening, 65% of the participants were viewed as more professional and 61% more confidant.

Regarding the simulated dates, evaluators expressed a greater interest in continuing their interaction or "date" with 54% of the participants, and 59% were judged to be more outgoing after their teeth were whitened.

The study, which interviewed 1600 people, produced the following results: A person's appearance indicates their professional success, according to 68% of the surveyed people. Further, it suggests their trustworthiness (52%) and their financial success (64%).

Categories of Tooth Stains
There are two categories of tooth stains. Extrinisic stains are caused by what you eat and what you drink, such as coffee and tea, and by smoking. Extrinsic stains are harder to remove the longer they haven't been treated. Intrinsic stains are caused by the interior conditions of a tooth. They are a natural result of aging and can be caused by an original malformation of the tooth.

Remedies for Stained Teeth
There are a number of remedies for stained teeth. There are two categories of remedies, whitening and bleaching. Whitening is the restoration of the natural appearance of your teeth by special toothpastes. Bleaching refers to the use of hydrogen peroxide to whiten teeth even more than their natural color. Note that "whitening" has come to mean either bleaching or whitening. Bleaching is either done in the dentist's office or with a home-use kit.

Bleaching in the dentist's office begins with the dentist applying a painted-on rubber dam to keep the bleach off of your gums. The bleach is then applied to the teeth, remaining on for up to an hour.

The dentist may provide you with a home-use bleaching kit. These kits provide trays that look like mouth guards. You squirt a gel that has a lower concentration of peroxide than that for the bleaching obtainable at the dentist's office into the trays. The dentist will tell you whether to leave the trays on overnight, or some shorter time.

One word of caution about peroxide whiteners: they can irritate your gums, and the irritation can last up to several days after bleaching. In rare instances, the bleach can damage the roots of teeth, so it is important to use the home kits only under the supervision of your dentist.
