Important Reminders when Processing eTA for Canada Travel

by Melissa W. Content Writer

Are you preparing to get into the process of getting an electronic travel authorization or eTA because you will be traveling to Canada soon? It seems like you have no other option but to get into it.

Just as review, the Canadian government started the requirement of having an eTA for all visa-free travelers to the country in March 2016. The electronic travel authorization is not replacing the visa in any way. But it is a a new documentary requirement that will help the country screen the incoming travelers.

If you are from a country where visa is a requirement when traveling to Canada, there is no need to bother yourself to obtain an eTA. Your visa will do. If you are a citizen of the United States, you also do not need to get an eTA. However, if you are a Green Card Holder, you must obtain one before going to Canada especially via air travel.

What to prepare

Are you ready to get the process going? Start with the necessary preparation. Get your passport and debit/credit card ready. Passport information would have to be provided as you complete an application form. Payment of a $7 Canadian dollar fee would have to be coursed through debit or credit card.

Visit the website of the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/eta.asp) to obtain see the application form and accomplish it online.

Important reminders

To be able to prevent any hassle or setback, please take note of the following reminders for people who are processing eTA. First, while accomplishing the online form, you must be aware that the information or forms can never be saved. You are given a limited time to fill up the form completely. When the reminder ‘Session timeout warning’ appears, just click the ‘Continue Session’ button and prepare to wrap up. Review all fields and do not leave any item blank.

You can only process one eTA at a time. If you need to get eTAs for a group, you have to do it one by one. Also print your receipt immediately after paying the $7 Canadian dollar fee or take note of the reference numbers just in case there would be any discrepancy. Lastly, always check your email for the next instructions or for the approval/disapproval notice. The message may be sent to your junk mail folder so also check on it while waiting for response.
