Emotions are a crucial element of human behavior. The synchronization in human thoughts, speech, and emotions are very necessary. The human ability to realize their own emotions, accept these emotions, and control these emotions to themselves is called Emotional Management skill. An emotionally intelligent person knows how to master his/her emotions. Emotional self-management is a necessary skill in building a healthy personality. The skill also dictates the success of an individual in the long run.

However, acing the skill of emotional management is no cakewalk. Every human being has an abundance of emotions and managing this abundance of emotions can prove out to be a tough task. No human is born with a natural ability to control their emotions. The skill is instilled in us when we are still in our initial age of growth and learning. As we grow we carry forward these skills into later stages of our life. This makes it important to teach emotional self-management to children through various practices at home and school.

Here are some of the practices which will help parents and teachers in inducing emotional self-management in children-

Teach Them to Face Challenges

We should teach our kids to face challenges instead of running away from them. When they are coming across any difficult situation we should ask them to confront it rather than turning their back to it. We as a parent or a teacher should furnish a supportive framework to them and should help them in overcoming challenges. Building this attitude in children is essential as this will help them in confronting challenges of all scales in their life.

Listen To Them

Give them a patient ear and listen to their feelings. Create a healthy bond with them. Provide them a safe haven where they should be able to express their feelings. Provide the assurance that it is okay to feel what they are feeling. This will help in inculcating a healthy expression of emotion in a child.

Provide Assistance and Avoid Scolding

When a child is facing difficulty in the task assigned to them in class or in their homework, instead of scolding them assists them. Provide them proper assistance in getting the work done. This will help them in building a positive attitude towards challenges. If instead of assisting them we will scold them they will develop insecurities at an early age. Vulnerability will creep in and they will prefer to run away from challenges instead of facing them.

Development of a healthy emotional self-management in a child helps them in instilling Nobel virtues of empathy and compassion in their behavior. Emotional intelligence also helps a child in improving and strengthening his/her relations with friends, family, and teachers. A healthy emotional self-management is also linked with a boost in academic performance and achievements.

Schools play a crucial role in developing emotional self-regulation in their students. The best schools in India give due importance to the skill of emotional self-management in the holistic development of the child. The school provides a healthy and nurturing environment where every student feels safe to share his/her feelings and discuss their problems. They aim at developing an emotionally intelligent student.
