Impact of Television advertisement on Children

by Pushpa Srivastava Executive
It is found in research that children aged between 2 years and 11 years generally spend 25 hours a week by watching television. That means children come across about 20,000 advertisements per year. It is seen that children are always vulnerable to the advertisement they cannot understand or evaluate the commercial purpose of a television advertisement. Whatever the commercial video maker shows in television advertisement children take it to be real. They cannot differentiate between reality and fantasy. To reduce the negative impact of television on children, it is essential to take responsibility by the advertising company, parents, and government of the nation.

Responsibility of Advertising Company

Thus the advertising company has a great role in society as the children will definitely learn from that what they have seen. The production companies have to take care that the content of their ad will directly impact on the children. Children can never understand the difference between commercial ads and the TV program. They take everything to be real and are highly influenced by what they see on television.

Responsibility of Parents

Some people think that parents should help the children in interpreting the television advertisement and make then understand which one is good for them and which are not. If the parents think that the products shown on television ads are not suitable for their children then they should make their children understand that they should not purchase the product as it may have some serious ill consequence.

Responsibility of Government of the nation

At the same time, the government also has a big role to play in protecting the children from the ill effect of advertisement. It is true that advertising is an indispensable part of life and it important to make people aware of the product. But there are some kinds of advertisement such as health injurious or adult products can have a seriously bad impact on the children.

Recommendation: For example, television advertisement of those products that is injurious to health or adult product such as a condom, Viagra, women pad, etc. These types of advertisement produce curiosity in the mind of the children about what the product is all about and how to use. Thus it is advisable to broadcast these kinds of sensitive advertisement on television at that time of the day when children do not watch television. Such timing can be during the night when children usually sleep or during the school hours of children when children remain busy with their studies. This way neither the video advertising company will be hampered nor the children will be affected by its serious consequence.

It is true that you cannot ban any product for telecasting on the television as it will deny the right of speech of the advertiser for communicating with the other audience and their target customers. But broadcasting such kind of TV advertisement only on particular time zone can solve all problems. Apart from that, the product that is beneficial for the health such as fruits, vegetables, health drinks, etc. should be telecasted more on that time zone when children mostly watch the television. So the production agencies should select their time of advertisement accordingly.
