We all remember the old movies of someone dangling a pocket watch in front of someone’s face as their eyes glaze over. The mantra, “you are getting sleepy”, is repeated until the person closes their eyes and their mind becomes completely in control by the other person. In one such experiment, students were connected to a brain imaging machine whilst looking at a black and white picture. Under hypnosis, the students were told that the picture was in fact in color and the brain scans showed that the areas of the brain which process color became active when that suggestion was made. While studying patients of the practice, hypnosis has been shown to relieve muscle tension, lower heart rate, lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety.

This idea is often thought of as a person who is glossed over, or glassy-eyed, unable to notice the world around them, but in actuality, it is a focused state of attention.
