Huawei Mate 40 Pro review: The full hardware package
by John Smith LearnerWe called the Huawei Mate 30 Pro
the forbidden fruit of 2019. It was an uncharacteristically great flagship
device with all the bells and whistles. However, it lacked easy access to
Google services and many popular apps. Since then, competition has intensified,
while Huawei's position in the industry has become more precarious due to
sanctions imposed by the US government. Has Huawei produced a better flagship for
late 2020 despite headwinds? Find out in Android Authority's Huawei Mate 40 Pro
review. The most common problem mate

Who is this phone for?
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro is
designed for those who are not dependent on the Google ecosystem. That means
Google apps like Gmail and Maps, as well as countless third-party apps that
require Google Play Services infrastructure to run. In other words, Mate 40 Pro
buyers will have to be willing to live without special apps or jumping through
hoops to make it work.
The Mate 40 Pro is not for the faint of heart.
In addition to applications, the
Huawei Mate 40 Pro is a perfect smartphone. This is a device for those who want
the best smartphone experience and are willing to pay for it. The Mate 40 Pro
combines high performance, powerful cameras, extended battery life and a
durable, premium build. This £1,099 smartphone is not for the faint of heart.
The Huawei Mate 40 Pro's premium
looks help it stand out from the crowd of cookie-cutter devices. On the front,
instead of the typical single camera hole, Huawei has opted for a larger
disc-shaped opening. Similarly, the circular rear camera bump on the back
stands out in a sea of domino-shaped units found on many phones in this
range, including Huawei's own P40 Pro. Curved glass edges on the front and back
make for an elegant device with thin bezels and small bezels. We have a Mystic
Silver model that emits different colors in different lighting conditions. It
looks great but can be slippery at times.
Looking at the device, you can
see a large circular camera bump on the back. The front has a large 6.76-inch
screen with a large hole in the upper left corner. The left side is bare.
Thankfully, there's a red power button and a separate volume rocker on the
right side. I say this because the volume rocker on the Mate 30 Pro had a weird
software implementation that almost didn't work with those physical keys. At
the top there is a speaker, infrared radiation and a microphone. Finally, at
the bottom is the USB-C port, speaker, microphone, and dual-SIM card tray.
The Mate 40 Pro feels adequate in the hand. Some of its thin edges make it look more compact than it is, but not entirely. The thin straps are grippy enough, but there isn't much, so the screen gets tapped a lot. However, despite the waterfall display, I didn't experience any unwanted tactile issues during the eight days I spent with the device, which means palm rejection is on the verge.
The Mate 40 Pro's tactile haptics are crisp and firm, but not quite at the level of the iPhone's Taptic Engine. Fortunately, the in-display fingerprint scanner is very fast and accurate. Huawei also offers a secure face unlock option that can be enabled in the Mate 40 Pro's settings menu. It's better than other face unlock apps because it uses 3D scanning instead of relying solely on the selfie camera.
