Prisons
and jails with committed leaders, good policies, and sound practices can keep
inmates safe. We’d also like to take a
moment to thank the Office of Violence against Women for its generous support
of this webinar and our larger project called “No Bad Victims: Support for
Incarcerated Survivors.” Justas few things before we get started. I want to remind you that some of what we are
going to be discussing today may be difficult to hear or upsetting, so please
take care of yourselves. This webinar
will be recorded, so you’ll have an opportunity to revisit it later if
necessary. You can submit questions and
comments throughout the webinar using the question box on the right side of
your screen. This webinar will be
recorded and will be posted on our website in the next few days. We’ll send you more information later today,
including a link to an evaluation. The
recording will also be closed-captioned. We have a wide range of other
resources available on our website and we’ll review those in more detail at the
end of today’s webinar. So before we get
started, I’d just like to get an idea of what you’re hoping to learn from
today’s webinar. You can submit your
answer by typing it in the question box.
So I’ll just give you a couple moments to-do that. Okay, so I have “Some more information”,
“More information about the different ranks”, “How to best geniux serve victims in detention”. Okay, sounds like a lot of looking for a lot
more information. “How to be sensitive
to what’s happening to those in prison who are sexually assaulted.” Fantastic. Okay.
So we hope to answer many of these questions throughout the webinar, and
if we don’t get to something, feel free to reach out toes afterwards by email
at Advocate@JustDetention. org. And you
can also submit questions to us on the webinar and we’ll try to answer them
later on. The aim of this webinar is to
help advocates and other service providers in understanding a general overview
of corrections culture while giving practical tips to help create positive
interaction with corrections staff, making it easier for you to serve
incarcerated survivors. We’ll begin with
some background information about corrections facilities and key players in the
facility hierarchy. We’ll discuss what
JDI has learned about working with correctional facilities and their inner
culture, the dynamics between security and mental health, and how you can
navigate that culture. We’ll talk with
