Having a floor box installed inside a large room can prove to be advantageous, and prevent the creation of unnecessary wire jungles. However, the most challenging thing that you have to deal with when planning to get a wooden or stainless steel floor box is the installation process, especially if the floor is made of concrete. But, the task can be accomplished without much hassle using the right tools and methods:

First, you will need to find the closest junction for connecting the electrical floor box. The junction would be a 4-inch box mounted most probably in the basement. Mark a line from it to the place where you need to install your electrical fixture and trace the outlines of the floor box in that place.

Equip an electric jackhammer with a spade concrete cutting bit. Wear appropriate safety gear like gloves, work clothes, helmet and goggles. Place the end of the spade on the concrete surface near the beginning of your marking. Switch the jackhammer on and break the concrete. Make sure the trench is only as deep and wide as required. Clean the residual debris once you are done.

Switch off the power of the primary circuit breaker that regulates the junction box. Measure the distance between the floor box area and the junction. Use the measurement for cutting off the conduit and run wires through it to make them jut out at both ends.

Open the junction box and knock out its plug using a screwdriver. Thread cords from the conduit straight in the junction and then pull up the conduit tight against its body within the retaining outlet. Tighten the retaining screw to secure it in place.

Establish connection between the black, white and bare copper wires of the junction box and the conduit. Make sure that their colours match. Now knock out the plug of the floor box and thread conduit & wires into it just like the junction. Lay the box inside the opening you created with the jackhammer. Loosen its terminals and to its live terminal, neutral terminal and green grounding screw, connect the black, white and copper wires from the junction respectively.

Now switch on the power and test the floor box using a voltmeter. Replace its cover and later on, seal the fixture into the ground by pouring concrete around it. Voila, you don’t need to tackle messy jungle of tangling wires anymore.
