VoIP systems are considered to be better alternatives for the traditional telephones. There are both advantages and disadvantages for this.

VoIP also called as the voice over internet protocol is a widely used technology, which uses the internet or other local networks to do voice calls. This technology is the cheapest yet fastest way to implement voice communication today. This technology can be implemented in various ways according to the range of connection required. This can be implemented either by using a LAN for an in-house voice communication, or an internet connection for long-range communication. The most seen example of VoIP today is the skype or google talk which uses internet for voice communication. The VoIP works with different types of protocols and device setups. Here were discussing some of the commonly seen VoIP. 

Types

There are different types of VoIP setups available today, they mainly different on their range or type of connection used.

Soft phone: - this is the software application of VoIP, mainly used for long range communication using internet connection. Tis will be an application like skype or google talk.
LAN VoIP: - PBX systems are examples of such VoIP systems. In this system, a number of telephones will be interconnected and voice calls are made between these devices. This is mainly used in case of a company setup. 

Protocols used

There are lot of protocols implemented today for VoIP systems. Few of the important protocols are listed here.
H.323
H.248
Session initiation protocol and session description protocol
Team speak
Skype
Real time transport protocol and real time transport control protocols
Media gateway control protocol of MGCP

The selection of the perfect protocol is based on the complexity of system. Special purpose software is used with these protocols to successfully implement the system.
 
Devices used

A proper and powerful hardware setup is an essential thing in any VoIP systems to ensure perfect voice communication. There are different devices used to obtain the correct hardware setup needed. Some of the important and commonly used devices are listed and described here

Analog telephone adapter: - It is also called as ATA an analogue telephone adapter is used for connection telephones with a LAN in a VoIP system. 

Session border controllers: - Session border controllers (SBCs) are one of the most commonly seen devices in the hardware setup of any VoIP systems. This is mainly used to border between different service providers. 

IP phone: - these are telephones which uses the VoIP technology to do voice communications. These looks similar to common telephones, but will be connected to a network like internet. Regular power supply is needed for these devices.

Lack of emergency call option
Uninterrupted power supply is required
Hardware impact

As any technology VoIP also has its own advantages and disadvantages. But in total the benefits of VoIP is really high and is helpful for many businesses.
