Support for surfing in Australia is so immense that Vegemite is promoting the education of young kids in surfing, teaching them the fundamentals so that everyone can surf safely in the water, and be safe on their boards. It is a great initiative by the company, and with awards, specialist programs and support for children up to the age of 14, surfing schools in the Gold Coast region have been quick to take part in this scheme, and there are now several places where kids can go to learn how to surf.

What is Vegemite surf groms?

The Vegemite program is a series of lessons for children occurring in holidays and at turn-time. It starts with MiniGroms, a program for 5-8 year-olds, teaching them the fundamentals including agility, balance and co-ordination when using the surfboard. These skills are not only perfect for surfing; they can also help them with general fitness and balance, helping them to be safe on land as well as in the water. Ages 9-14 are the SuperGroms, where they have a more skill-based teaching program that can help them to learn to surf both physically and mentally.

What are the levels?

There are 6 different levels designed to teach children of all ages. The first level is basic, for absolute beginners, teaching them about the ocean and surfing principles. As the levels increase, students at private surf lessons in Gold Coast will be taught more about surfing skills, and the techniques for each surfing move, increasing their ability. At the same time, the necessary skills for surfing are not overlooked, and include surf safety, awareness and agility, ensuring that not only do they enjoy their own surfing experience, but also that they are able to surf safely around others.

Why use the Vegemite surfing programs?

The reason that many children use the SurfGroms program is that it teaches children the essentials for surfing at a young age, when they are most able to adapt themselves to the demands of the skills, and when they are also able to learn the necessary safety lessons. In addition to being taught to surf, the children also receive gifts, including backpacks, T-shirts and hats, designed to encourage them to participate. The SurfGroms will also get certificates and wristbands - rather like martial arts - showing their skill level within the program. Most of all, learning to surf in MiniGroms and SuperGroms is fun, and a great way to ensure children are fit and healthy.
