How to use your iPhone during a Medical Emergency

Imagine a situation: you are unconscious due to an accident. Your wallet is missing and all that the medical professionals have is your iPhone. But, it is locked with a pass code. Can they treat you? Do they know what medications have you been taking and have you suffered from a medical condition prior to this accident? Yes they can, but only if you have entered all your medical information in your phone’s health app. Here’s how your iPhone can save your life during a medical emergency with the Health app:

• Launch the Health app on your iPhone.
• Tap ‘Medical ID’ appearing at the bottom of the screen.
• ‘Edit’ will appear on the top right corner of the screen as soon as you enter the Medical ID screen. Tap ‘edit’ and start entering your information.
• Your name and picture are already appearing on the screen, enter your medical conditions, ailments, any notes that you might want to add in the medical notes section, emergency contact number and the person’s relation, allergies and reactions. Make sure that you provide complete information regarding your health; the medications you have been taking, any medical condition that you suffered recently etc. Fill the remaining sections, such as organ donor, blood group weight etc.
• After you’re done filling out all the information, at the top of the screen you’ll see ‘Show when locked,’ turn on this option.
• After editing, tap done. Recheck all your information that you added in medical Information. Edit if required.
• To make sure that your information is available to medical staff in emergencies, check the changes you have made.
• Lock your screen, and by swiping your finger to the right on the screen, unlock it. Tap the Emergency link appearing on the lower left corner of the screen. On the dial pad screen, ‘Medical ID’ link will now be appearing. Tap on the link and you will be able to view all the information that you entered.
• This screen can be viewed by the medical staff and professionals to make sure that they are aware of your medical condition and that they can continue with your treatment in an emergency situation.
