How to Use Paint Color in a Room

by Kevin Smith Author

There are many things you can do with paint colors to make a room feel larger, a ceiling feel closer, disguise items you don’t want to call attention to, and more. However, accomplishing these effects yourself can be challenging. Work with a painting contractor in Atlanta, for a professional job well done. Here are some tips for using paint color in a room.

Make the Ceiling Feel Closer or Further Away

If you have a room that feels uncomfortably big, and you want to bring in a little bit more warmth and coziness, then try painting the ceiling in a color that is darker than the walls. This will give the ceiling the effect that it is closer to you. However, if you have a room that feels a little too tight and cramped, then opt for a lighter color for your ceiling. This will give the effect that your ceiling is raised and actually further away, than it actually is. This will make your room feel more expansive. Also, if you have an exterior or outdoor space, such as a porch area, you can also paint the ceiling of that space, as well. Since it is an outdoor space, if you go with a lighter shade of blue, this will give a nice effect of the sky above, which will blend in well with the natural surroundings.

Small but Open

If you have a small space, that has somewhat of an open concept where you may have one or more rooms visible or joined together, here’s a tip for making the space feel larger with paint. Simply, use the same paint color for all of the rooms that are open or joined together in that space. This allows the eyes to flow across from room to room, without interruption, which gives off the effect that the space is more expansive.

Using Stripes

Stripes are no longer a common option, when it comes to doing a whole room in stripes, or overly using them in any space. However, in moderation, stripes can provide the right necessary effect and finishing touches. If you have a room that you would like to make feel taller, than you can utilize vertical stripes to accomplish this. Again, you only need to use stripes in moderation. Horizontal stripes also come in handy for when you need to make a space feel more elongated or broad.

Hide Less Flattering Items

There are certain things in every room that we don’t want to highlight. Most of these things can’t so easily be eliminated, like AC vents. To minimize their appearance, simply paint them in the same color you chose for the walls.
