by Aida Martin Norton Setup

One of the advantages of having a small-screen laptop like Apple’s 12in MacBook or the MacBook Air is that you can easily double your screen real estate by using an iPad as a second screen.

As a second monitor using an iPad is an ideal solution for those who only have access to a small-screen laptop like Apple’s 12in MacBook or 11.3in MacBook Air, as it effectively increases and doubles the size of the display, enabling you to be more productive. For your Mac, keep reading on to find out how to utilize your iPad as a second screen.

What will you need?

  • An iPad
  • Lightning to USB cable
  • Some software like iDisplay, Duet Display, and AirDisplay.
  • Unfortunately, 10.13.4 broke some of the DisplayLink functionality that these apps rely on, so a Mac running macoS13.3 or earlier.

Steps to Use iPad as a Second Display

As an example, here we are using Duet Display, and it was developed by a team of ex-Apple engineers. Luckily, it enables you to utilize the tablet as a second display not just on Mac but also on PC too.

Given below is an overview of how to use your iPad Pro as a second display using Duet Display, with more in-depth instructions below:

  1. Firstly, Open the App Store and install Duet Display on your iPad Pro at the time of writing.
  2. Then, Head over to the Duet Display website and download the Duet for Mac/Windows app on your Mac or PC.
  3. After that, the Duet companion app for Mac or PC should be installed. This is one of the significant steps as the companion app enables your iPad and Mac to ‘talk’ to each other. Then the installation instruction should be followed, and then restart your Mac to finish the installation.
  4. Then, on your iPad Pro, using a Lightning cable to open the Due Display app and plug it into your PC or Mac.
  5. Next, remember that by the Duet companion app iPad Pro should be recognized, and your desktop should now extend into two displays. You’re then ready to start! Note that quality settings can be tweaked via the Duet companion app on your PC or Mac to give higher graphics, smoother refresh rates, etc.
  6. Lastly, to close the app on your iPad, you need to disconnect the display.

Congratulations, now you can use your iPad as a second screen for your Mac.
