The relation between ashwagandha and weight gain

People mainly wonder whether ashwagandha causes weight gain/ weight loss. The answer to this question can be found in some of the renowned ayurvedic texts.

The ayurvedic text Charak Samhita describes ashwagandha as bhrimaneeya and balya, which means a herb which improves body mass, and nourishment; strength and immunity, respectively.

The text Sushruta Samhita, mentions ashwagandha as herb who manages malnutrition. Also, in the text, Bhav Prakash ashwagandha is cited as a helpful herb which cures conditions like emaciation and provides strength to the body. All of these texts support the ideology of ashwagandha being a weight gaining ayurvedic herb.

Scientific research on ashwagandha’s benefits-

A study performed on rats for three months determined that there was a substantial increase in body weight after feeding rats with ashwagandha.

One more study was carried out on 57 young male subjects for eight weeks. Two sets of groups were made here. One set had 29 male subjects (treatment group), and the other set had 28 male subjects (placebo group).

Twice a day, the male subjects of the treatment group were given 300 mg of the ashwagandha roots extract while the placebo group was assigned starch. After 8 weeks, the results presented that the group treated with ashwagandha had a significant increase in muscular strength and muscle size.

Ashwagandha benefits in forming a Muscular bulk, which in turn adds to weight gain. Nevertheless, weight gain because of muscular bulk differs from weight gain due to growth in body fat.

Another study which took place in the year 2012 displayed that healthy men who consumed 750–1,250 mg of ashwagandha per day gained muscle strength after 30 days. Thus, modern research also supports the role of ashwagandha in weight gain.

Instead of opting for ashwagandha roots extract, you can buy ashwagandha powder at retail shops, or you can buy the powder online through home delivery.
