How To Use An International Sim Card

by IV S. Consultant
Travelling, whether for business or leisure can be a very expensive affair. From flight tickets to accommodation expenses, there are a list of things that can considerably deplete your bank account. This makes it all the more important for you to know how to save money, even when travelling abroad! One of the most important things you must have before embarking on a journey is an international sim card

International sim cards allow you to stay connected with friends and family back home and also let you use data in your travel destination. All this, without returning home to a ridiculously expensive bill from your home network provider. International sim cards come with a latitude of options and packages, and you can choose one that is ideal for you. If you are a heavy user, then it will be better if you opt for a package that offers unlimited calls or data services. If you are a light user, you can choose a prepaid sim with a specific number of minutes of talk time. International sim cards make travel easier especially when you might be travelling to multiple countries as part of your trip.

There are a number of companies that offer USA SIM cards, Europe SIM cards and others. They also offer discounts during the holiday season. Choose a reputed company with a strong customer service, a large customer base and good offers!

Here are a few tips to know to stay connected on your international trip:

1). There are two types of SIM cards - CDMA and GSM. Most of the world uses GSM sims. Just ensure that your Sim card is the GSM type that can be used in Europe and other countries.

2). Check if your phone allows you to use an international sim card. Most of the latest phones are quad-band GSM phones. If you are a frequent traveller, ensure that you get GSM quad-band phones. If it’s a single trip then you must enquire whether your quad-band phone will work in the travel destination you are headed to.
3). Make sure your phone is unlocked. Most companies unlock the phone for you. However, if it has been missed out, you cannot use an international sim card. If you don’t want to unlock your phone, then you can invest in an inexpensive GSM quad travel phone. However, these do not come with the latest features available in smartphones. You can tell if your phone is locked or not by putting in a sim card with a different wireless service than the one you are currently using. If your phone is locked, it will usually display an error code. If it displays a message saying unregistered sim or no network, it is unlocked.

4). Another important detail not to be missed out while travelling is ensuring you carry multi-voltage chargers. Most countries have a different voltage. For example, USA uses 110v whereas others use 220v or 250v. Having a phone is of no use if you cannot charge it in your travel destination!

Keep in mind the above tips and be sure you check your phone and sim card before travelling abroad. Keep friends and family stress-free by staying connected and keeping them posted at all times when you travel. Choose an international sim card and save money!
