How To Use A Dog Car Ramp

by Agung So Blogger

When a dog starts to age, it’s usually harder for them to jump, run, walk and perform other physical activities. Their bones become brittle, making the pooch more susceptible to health problems caused by too much movement.

When this happens, the use of a dog car ramp becomes invaluable. The car ramp allows the owners to place stairs in elevated areas, ensuring that their pet never has to jump from one spot to the next. Since the car ramp is moveable and light, dog owners can store it somewhere in the house and simply use it when necessary.

Teaching the Dog with Treats

Learning how to use a dog car ramp is easy for the owner – but what about the dog? Chances are, the pooch will find the ramp confusing and be afraid to come near it at first. With patience however, it’s possible for owners to make their pooch use the item on command.

Start off by choosing a specific word for the action. It can be “up” or “climb” or a completely different word that will be easy to distinguish by the pooch. Once done, place the dog car ramp beside any elevated area inside the house. It’s also possible to practice this trick directly on the car, depending on the owner’s preferences.

Position yourself on the other side of the ramp and beckon the dog using some treats. Place a treat on the first step and reward the pooch for placing his paw on the first level. Do this every time the pooch elevates a step until he reaches the topmost level. From here, owners have the option of doing the training in reverse (going down the ramp) or start again from the bottom.

When practicing how to use a dog car ramp backwards, owners will need to be stricter with the process. If the dog decides to just jump down instead of using the rap, lift him back up to the topmost ladder and try again. This will make the pooch understand that he’s supposed to follow a process.

Weaning Him Off Treats

Note that using treats every time is not a good idea. Dog owners are advised to start weaning off the pooch by awarding less and less “gifts”. For example, instead of feeding the pooch one treat for each stair, try giving him one for a successful climb. Breaking off the treats into tiny pieces will also help with portion control as treats can ruin the dog’s diet.

Training Difficulty

It’s usually best to teach dogs how to use a car ramp while still young. This makes it easier for the dog to remember the command and follow through. Of course, older dogs are also capable of learning how to use the ramp, especially since they’re the ones that really need it. Owners are advised to be very patient during teaching and stay constant with their commands. A dog that has been previously trained with the basic orders can also pick up this new “trick” easily.
