How to Take Care of Your Varsity Jacket?

by Sara Menon Content writter

If you have a varsity jacket, it must be very dear to you since it makes you feel like the rapper and artist that you are. That means you wouldn’t mind going the extra mile to maintain it. Ever since the letterman jacket has made a comeback in the world of fashion, people have been going gaga over it and experimenting with various styles. While the traditional varsity jackets are simple, the fashionable options often come with embellishments and details.

Varsity jackets need to be cleaned diligently while making sure you don’t damage them in the process. Here are some steps you can follow to keep your varsity jackets spotless.

  • Refer to the label: Although the original jackets are made of cotton, leather and wool, the new and trendy ones could contain some synthetic material. Hence, do refer to the label to check the material and instructions for washing, if any.

  • Dust off the sleeves: Wipe the dust off the leather sleeves using a soft, dry cloth.

  • Handling stains: For spots that contain dirt, dab the leather with a soft cloth dipped in mild soapy water. Dabbing makes sure the leather doesn’t get wet. Once you remove the stain, dab it again with a dry cloth and hang it up to dry. In case of persistent stains, use some alcohol to remove them. For oil stains, spread cornstarch over the patch, while for water stains, wet the leather completely by dabbing it.

If you have split something on your woollen jacket, wipe it off with a piece of rag. Wipe stains made from oil and grease with a lint-free cloth dipped in vinegar. For tea, coffee and chocolate stains, mix vinegar with alcohol and wipe the jacket with a lint-free cloth. Vinegar will also help remove blood stains. If you ever wish to pop it in the washing machine, select a gentle cycle with cold water and less soap.

You can also hand leave your jacket with a professional laundry service.

  • Reverse the jacket: Always turn the jacket inside out while putting it for a wash so that the leather does not get ruined.

Now that you know how to take care of your letterman jacket and make it last a lifetime, you can add more to your collection. Pair them with one of these glamorous head gears and you are sure to turn all the heads.
