How to Store Coffee to Keep it Fresh and Flavorful for Long

by Nancy Jemes Blogger
When it comes to storing coffee, every person has their own opinion about how to keep it best. Some people keep the coffee in a bag or can and leave it in the cabinet and some vacuum seal and throw it in the freezer.

But there are some specific ways that must be followed to keep the coffee fresh and flavourful for a long time. Here are some important steps on how to store the coffee correctly for maximum freshness and flavor and what value coffee storage containers hold for such:

Prevent the Access of Air, Light, and Moisture
Coffee is best suited to be kept in a dry and airtight container and when you are choosing a container and location of coffee storage, be sure to avoid air, heat, light, and moisture.

Coffee Storage Location
You’ll want to keep your coffee in a location that’ll keep it fresh and flavorful. There are some tips you need to keep in your mind always:

  • Cool, dark and dry places are best for coffee storage.
  • You should avoid fridges and freezers because they are moist.
  • Also avoid warm spots, like a cabinet or oven because that gets hot from exposure to cooking equipment or sunlight.

Coffee Container Types
Once the original packing of coffee is opened, it loses its freshness quickly. For this reason, you’ll want to put your coffee into the right container as soon as possible:

  • Glass, ceramic or non-reactive metal containers are best for storing coffee.
  • Keep your coffee container in a cool and dark place and for the countertop storage opaque, airtight containers are best.

Coffee Freshness over Time
Coffee loses its freshness in the first few days after it’s roasted. To keep your coffee fresh, you can buy roasted coffee in quantities that’ll only last one to two weeks

Don’t Switch Container
When you buy coffee in a proper packing then there is no reason to transfer it into another container because packing should be done to provide the correct storage of coffee, that’s opaque and airtight.

Store It in The Freezer, not the Fridge
It is a myth that coffee will remain fresh if put in the fridge. Humidity and coffee don’t belong together, because each time you open the fridge moisture condenses on the jar when it contacts the coffee, spoiling the taste. So, if you want to store your coffee for a long period of time, you can instead use the freezer.

Ground Coffee vs. Whole Beans
Ground beans have much large area than whole beans, so it goes bad faster. If you’ve time and equipment you can grind coffee beans each morning. But, if you don’t want to do this then you can still have delicious coffee if you use whole beans within one month of roasting and ground beans within two weeks of roasting.

Grocery Stored Coffee
When you go to the grocery to buy coffee it’s important to choose valve-sealed rather than vacuum-sealed brands because valve-sealed allow gases to escape from the coffee packaging so coffee can be packaged in it immediately after roasting.

These are some helpful tips to keep your coffee fresh and flavorful for a long period of time and would provide you insight on what type of coffee storage container you need.
