How to Spot Fake OEM Parts?

by Shaun Carey GmOutletParts

As the miles keep adding, it is inevitable to stay away from vehicle repairs. And fixing damaged components is one of the many repair expenses that you will face at least once throughout the vehicle’s lifespan.

But, not everyone who purchases vehicle components has a damaged vehicle. Some just wish to upgrade their vehicles. However, regardless of what your need is to buy GM replacement parts, being vigilant is an absolute necessity. This is because there is an increased supply of counterfeit auto parts in the market.

So, if you are interested in buying OEM auto parts, then look out for these signs to spot fake OEM parts.

1- Inspect the packaging and compare it: The counterfeit market usually targets the most used auto parts. So, carefully inspecting the packaging and comparing it with the OEM part’s packaging is key to identify the fake parts.

If possible, carry the OEM part with you to make a side-by-side comparison. Inspect the color, graphics, texture, and other markings on the packaging.

Inspect the COA (certificate of authenticity) sticker pasted on the package. It should comprise a security code and a unique ID on it.

2- Analyse and compare the prices: Another way of spotting fake OEM parts is by comparing and analyzing the item’s price. Genuine GM parts are costlier than GM aftermarket parts and counterfeit parts.

So, if the parts sold by the auto shops or suppliers are at too good to be true price, then those may be fake or made of low-quality materials. Saving a little by opting for such parts will only prove costlier down the line.

Besides, OEM comes with a money-back guarantee. If that is absent, then it should be considered a red flag.

3- Only purchase from trusted and reputable suppliers: When purchasing OEM parts, always deal with highly trusted and reputable suppliers. Ask your friends, colleagues, and family for recommendations and their experience with a particular supplier.

Also, when purchasing from a repair shop, ensure that they have the license to sell genuine OEM parts.

Regardless, a trusted supplier and repair shop won’t risk losing its reputation by selling fake products.

4- Always request computerized bills: To be on the safer side, it is wise to request the seller for official, computer-generated bills. Many sellers try escaping the anti-counterfeit laws by not providing official receipts.

Therefore, it is mandatory to insist on the original invoice or receipts from the sellers, regardless of where you are buying from. Besides, these bills can prove helpful down the line if things go south and you wish to claim insurance.

Over to you

Well, there you have it. These are easy and straightforward ways of distinguishing between fake and genuine OEM parts.
