In life, it is usually the small things that matter and it’s amazing how many small structural components in your home can need repair over time – from the lock of the front door to a minor roof leakage! But as all these problems have a huge effect on our everyday lives, why not take care of those problems as soon as they occur?

If you have been facing a roof leakage in your home, here are some ways to fix this small and ensure the integrity of the structure:

Assessing the Roof Leakage

First things first! Assess the leak before proceeding further. It is important to understand the leakage and how it has occurred prior to deciding what should be done about it. The leakage may be caused due to a torn shingle, a small hole in the flashing or due to chimney problems. Whatever the cause may be, take immediate steps to repair it, to prevent it from spreading and increasing the roof damage.

Fixing the Shingles

A bad storm can damage the shingles. Thus, you need to take measures to protect your roof from becoming damaged further! If the damage is minor, you can repair it yourself. Grab a tube of roofing cement and a piece of aluminum flashing. Cut the flashing approximately 1 inch narrower than the ripped tab and about 4 inches longer so that it can extend on either side under the tabs. With the help of a flat pry bar, loosen the damaged tab and the tabs on the right and left. Then, apply two or three thick beads of roofing cement to the surface beneath the shingle. Place the flashing underneath it, to apply additional roofing cement on top of the flashing. To adhere the flashing on the roof, press the tab down. A quick fix for your damaged shingles is complete!

Repairing Chimney Seeps

Many of us face peeling paint issues on our chimney masonry. So how can this be avoided? Install a galvanized, copper or stainless rain cap. The major cause of peeling chimney paint is water, particularly when it works its way, from the inside out. The rain cap will thus, keep the water out of the flue. You can easily buy these caps as they are affordably priced at approximately $30 and are available in almost all building supply and home repair outlets.
