How to Renovate a Bathroom: 5 Essential Tips

by Mike Pelletier funnel edge marketing

According to Caesarstone Edmonton, you will recover 75 to 100 percent of your cost when you renovate your bathroom.

Not only do bathroom remodels improve the value of a home, but they also can make a bathroom more efficient, functional, and stylish.

Knowing about these five essential tips on how to renovate a bathroom will help you get clear on where to start and how to make the most of your renovation.

1. Prepare for How to Renovate a Bathroom

Prepare yourself first for the cost of renovating your bathroom. On average, bathroom remodels cost a little over $19,000 for a mid-size bathroom. So unless you have a bunch of cash saved up, plan on either financing the project or paying as you go.

Then, mentally prepare for the inconvenience. If you have a second bathroom, make sure that it's ready for your entire family's use.

2. Consider Usage

As you consider the myriad of choices you have to make from flooring to fixtures, consider the usage of your bathroom. If you're renovating a light-usage bathroom such as a guest room that doesn't get used daily, you don't need high-end fixtures.

If, however, you're renovating a bathroom that'll be used multiple times a day or a bathroom that kids will use, use higher-end fixtures and durable flooring. Kids' bathrooms, in particular, need a floor that can handle the water from splashing in the tub and a sturdy towel bar that someone will inevitably use as a pullup bar.

3. Light It Up

Bathrooms often have poor lighting by nature, so consider soft lights as opposed to harsh fluorescent lights in your bathroom. Light will also add style to your bathroom, so select timeless but memorable fixtures.

Use natural light if you can. Trending renovations are even putting a window in the shower to add natural light.

Recessed fixtures above the sink will give you the best light for cosmetic purposes, and soft light will set a mood perfect for a relaxing bath.

Bathrooms tend to have little access to natural light, hence the need for excellent lighting. As you plan your bathroom remodel, consider changing or adding to your current lighting to improve the functionality and mood of the space.

4. Splurge in Moderation

As you draw up your budget and consider your fixtures, add in a splurge for one item in particular. Maybe you've always wanted some beautiful, high-end shower tile. Make that your splurge.

Bathrooms have all kinds of luxurious possibilities now. Recessed cabinets and low-flow hidden toilet tanks save space and look sleek. Clawfoot tubs give your bathroom an old-world look.

Whatever you fancy, use your splurge purposefully.

5. Schedule Bathroom Contractors

You may be a super handy person, but bathrooms are technical. You need to understand electricity and plumbing, all while making the room aesthetically pleasing.

The combination of functionality and aesthetics is something you need to call a professional for which is why you should consider subcontracting some of the jobs.

Duct tape is not your friend here. The only silver you should see is the shiny sheen of a fixture.

Beauty Meets Function

Bathrooms are more than just a functional room. They're one more canvas for a creative mind to work to design both a beautiful and practical space. When you consider your renovation carefully, you will end up not with just a room that you love but a room that will make your home more valuable.
