How to Match Types of Dentistry with Your Needs?

by Kevin Smith Author

Dental terms can be confusing. There are a number of different types of dentistry (periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, etc.) as well as general dentistry, which has its own subgroups. If you are looking at options for family and cosmetic dentistry in Houston, TX, here are some definitions for you and then some advice on what type of dentistry you need.

Preventative

This is just like it sounds. The work a dentist does on you in this regard is about preventing your mouth and teeth from giving you problems. It includes teeth cleanings, exams, initial x-rays, diagnostic tests, oral cancer screenings and consultations to help you decide the best dental strategies for you and your family.

You also play a very active role in a preventative dental strategy, mainly by following your dentist’s advice and instructions. Those instructions include advice and guidance on how to brush your teeth, floss and inspect / monitor your teeth, gums and mouth for changes. Each of these instructions is geared towards preventing disease or other health issues, like tooth decay, gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth loss.

Restorative

As it sounds, restorative dentistry is the process of fixing something that has gone awry. It is restoring your dental and oral health to a point before whatever happened occurred. This could be addressing tooth decay or gingivitis, mending a crack or break, etc. On a constant basis, your teeth and mouth are under assault. Sugar, bacteria and food debris can lead to decay and infection. Chewing causes a lot of wear and tear. Smoking, tea and some foods stain teeth.

Grinding and clenching can wear on the teeth and cause damage to the mouth and jaw. The list is almost endless. To fix, combat and restore damaged teeth, restorative dentistry includes, but is not limited to fillings, root canals, crowns, bridges and implants.

Cosmetic

The purpose of cosmetic dentistry is to beautify your smile. It is not to prevent issues or restore damage (although some cosmetic procedures can include restorative dentistry procedures such as fixing a chipped or broken tooth.) The purpose of cosmetic dentistry is to give you the best possible smile and oral presentation. It can include teeth whitening, bonding, contouring, gum contouring, veneers and Botox.

Generally, a patient would opt for cosmetic dentistry when they have no other dental or oral issues. They would undergo a procedure in order to improve their smile or if they had restorative dental work to emphasize that. Anything that is geared towards fixing something (with the exception of teeth whitening) is not considered cosmetic dentistry.

It is good to know the type of dental care you are looking to receive as you consider options for family and cosmetic dentistry in Houston, TX. These three types of dental care can help you narrow down your options and choose the best dental fit for you and your family.
