How to Make Your Fully Remote Company a Success

by Denny F. My Opinion

The pandemic has led to a rise in fully remote businesses. If this is a concept you are interested in, you probably want to know the best ways to turn it into a success. Here are the top guidelines you should follow:

Tailor Your Business Plan for Remote Work

Once you have narrowed down the industry for the home jobs you want to focus on, your next order of business is to create a business plan. However, this must be customized to fit the structure of remote work.

You will need to outline the following:

  • Company core values and how they will be maintained via online strategies

  • The kind of remote workforce you hire - freelancers, contractors, or full-time employees

  • Whether employees can work from home or in co-working spaces and if there is financial reimbursement

  • Policies and guidelines specifically pertaining to an online business

Outline Remote Working Policies

You need to determine your policies before you move onto the hiring stage, otherwise you will be unable to outline what you expect from your employees. Start with deciphering what it is you require from your remote workers. Remote working opens up the possibility of a more flexible work schedule. Is this something you are willing to offer your employees or do you want to stick with a traditional nine to five setup?

This type of business also creates opportunities for self-management. Do you want your employees to be able to self-regulate their schedules or will you have managers in place to keep track of performance?

There is also the matter of communication. When it comes to remote work, communication is key. As a result, it is imperative that you have a policy in place that outlines the specific requirements for communication. This includes the mode of communication, how often you expect employees to communicate with you, and how to collaborate when the need arises.

Hiring the Right Remote Workers

This is one of the biggest issues that most work from home jobs and companies struggle with. Although remote work is becoming more commonplace, most employees don’t have the experience, skills, or training to effectively manage such a position.

Not hiring the right people can result in a number of problems. These include (but aren’t limited to) poor time management, low quality of work, and miscommunication among employees and clients.

It is due to these potential issues that you should have a rigorous interviewing and hiring process in place. The first thing you need to ensure is that all interviews should be face to face. Even if you can’t meet the candidate personally, arrange video calls. It is a lot easier to get the measure of a person when you’re speaking to them directly.

Furthermore, don’t stick to regular interview questions. Instead, consider the specific requirements of this remote position. Then, structure the questions accordingly to determine how a particular candidate will function under those circumstances.

To be certain of your selection, set a task for your candidate to complete. Ensure that the task tests the skills and capabilities that the individual needs to showcase once they are employed. Such a test can help you determine how they handle aspects such as time management, communication skills, and more. To ensure you're finding the right candidates, you can enlist an executive search firm to assist you in the process.

These are the main points to focus on to make your fully remote company a success. As long as you have an appropriate business plan, effective policies in place, and hire the right people, you won’t have a problem in turning a profit.
