How To Make The Most Of The Millennial Generation Working In Your Company
The Millennial Difference
Baby Boomers are no longer considered the largest generation in the workplace. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the millennial generation will constitute 75% of the work force by 2030. In the past year alone, the millennials far surpassed Gen-Xers.
Often thought of as a self-entitled, flaky and tech-obsessed generation, millennials will actually benefit the work place. Of course, how managers deal with this generation of young people makes all the difference. Steve Gilliland, one of the best motivational and inspirational speakers in North America, shares the following helpful tips on how businesses can deal with – and make the most of – this thriving generation:
Show Them Respect
The millennials are better adjusted. They care about the purpose of their company – which is why when employees come to you with ideas or complaints, listen. Millennials want to feel that their feedback is valued; therefore, create a process that makes room for consideration and implementation of their ideas.
Put Them in Groups – Create Teams
For some time now, millennial have been changing the course of the workforce. According to one Bloomberg article, as baby boomers set up for retirement, companies have begun preparing millennials for leadership roles. They work better in teams, bringing on board more technology in the form of data analytics, etc. Because they’ve grown up in an era where information is more accessible than it has ever been, creativity comes easily. Combine this sense of innovation with their social mindedness, and you have employees who can work great in teams.
Talk to Them Face to Face
Millennials are no different from other workers. In other words, they want to talk about not only their current work, but the possible career advancements, too. They could be tech savvy; but when it comes to having discussions, over 96% of millennials prefer conducting them face to face.
Provide Structure
People older (and wiser) than millennials often are of the mind-set that young people do whatever they like whenever they like, but this isn’t the case. Millennials know and understand that, as a manager of even a small company, you still have productivity expectations, meeting times, project deadlines and the like. Employees know they have to move forward, but they need proper guidance. Provide the required structure and see your employees shine.
Regularly conducting motivational sessions and workshops can also help bring out the best out in the millennials. Get in touch with Steve Gilliland and see what the celebrity motivational speaker can do for your organization and your team – regardless of the generation.
