How to Live With Bulging Discs

by SpineSurgery India Spine Surgeon in India
Bulging discs occur when the small round cushions between the vertebral discs age and deteriorate. Usually the disc becomes weak and flattens, allowing it to protrude from the spinal column. Almost everyone will experience bulging of the discs during their lifetime because it is part of the aging process. Many times the bulging discs do not cause pain, other times they push on nerve roots in the back and cause acute pain in the back, hips, legs or arms. For the majority of people, an acute disc bulge can heal itself over time. Coping with the pain while you seek treatment can be extremely difficult. In this  will help you learn how to live with bulging discs.

1.Develop a relationship with a doctor.
If you know you have bulging discs, then you have probably already undertaken some tests, like an MRI, that show your condition. A good relationship with a trusted general practitioner (GP) or a spine clinic doctor that knows your condition can help you to quickly treat symptoms as they arise.
There are many bulging discs treatments, including anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, steroid injections and, in extreme cases, surgery. Each back is different, so each doctor will follow different path according to your pain, mobility, age and other symptoms.

2.Improve your body mechanics, such as posture.
Seek a referral to a physical therapist that can help you improve the way you move so that you reduce the amount of stress on your body. This can include reducing or eliminating bending, lifting, twisting and possibly sitting.
One of the main elements of body mechanics is sleeping position. Sleeping on your back with your knees propped up, or on your side with a pillow between your legs eases pressure on lumbar spine and the discs. If you have a bulge to 1 side of your spine, sleep on the opposite side of your back to reduce pressure on the bulge.

3.Engage in regular low-impact exercise, as advised by a doctor or physical therapist. Spinal discs are fed through movement, rather than blood vessels. Walking, swimming, cycling on a recumbent bike or doing modified yoga can help you to improve circulation and healing.

4.Create a isometric exercise routine that strengthens your core muscles. Your abdominal, back, Gluteal and leg muscles all support your back. A spinal stabilization, Pilates or yoga routine increases support from the muscles, which usually eases bulging disc pain.
Make sure to modify regular yoga or Pilates routines to eliminate twisting, stooping or bending. These activities can exacerbate the bulge. If you take yoga or Pilates classes, ask your teacher to provide injury-friendly alternatives.

5.Manage your weight. Overweight people are prone to more back pain, because there is added stress on each disc. It can be hard to control weight while you are in pain, so consult your doctor or nutritionist about finding a path to weight loss.

6.Modify your workplace. Sitting and stooping place a large amount of stress on your back. Your physical therapist may advise using a lumbar support chair or a modified desk where you can sit and stand.

7.Invest in a supportive bed and pillows. Many people sleep on uneven, soft beds that can increase pressure on the vertebrae and lower back. A firm bed can reduce pain and help you get a good night's sleep, an essential component to the healing process.

8.Seek out a support system of friends and family, especially if you have chronic pain from your bulging disc. Chronic pain can lead to depression and stress, which hamper your body's ability to heal. Plan regular conversations and interactions with people who make you happy.
Your local hospital or clinic may offer pain support groups. Talking with other people who understand what you are going through can ease frustration and loneliness caused by chronic pain.

9.Develop a stress-relief routine. Try activities such as massage, acupuncture, baths, walking, meditation or yoga, to help you handle both the physical and mental manifestations of stress after injury.
