How to identify pure ghee?

by Pallavi Goswami content writer

Pure ghee is bliss in our daily diet. Ghee benefits are wholesome but sourcing pure quality ghee is not an easy task. Ghee comes in different varieties under different brands. But, not all of them are pure in quality. In this article, we will discuss what are the simple tests to check the purity of ghee. If you have recently purchased a bottle of ghee and thinking whether it is pure or not, read the below-mentioned points -

  • You can take a spoonful of ghee on your palm and check if the ghee starts melting. If yes, then it is pure cow ghee as pure ghee melts against our normal body temperature.

  • Add some sugar to a melted ghee bottle and shake it. Let it sit for 5-8 minutes and if any red color appears on the bottom then it contains impurities of vegetable oil.

  • Melt one tablespoon of ghee and mix a few drops of iodine into it. If you see any kind of purple color in the mix then the ghee has starch in it, which means it is impure.

  • Pure ghee gets melted quickly and turns brown. Take a spoonful of ghee and add to a hot pan. If it melts immediately and turns brown, the ghee is pure.

  • You can also check the shelf life of the ghee butter mentioned in the packaging. Good quality ghee has a 12-18 months shelf life from the manufacturing date.
