How to Grow Your Business Internationally

In most cases of a business expanding abroad, the motivation is to overcome saturation, revenue decline, and other issues affecting it on the domestic market, or just to grow more rapidly. However, such an endeavor is not often considered a safe bet, with many companies getting a sharp rebuttal to their ambitions just months after reaching foreign shores. There are several tips and practices you can engage to improve your odds as you expand your business abroad, from localising your website to possibly changing brand symbols.

  1. Research the new market
  2. While you are used to doing your business one way, it is quite likely that you will need to adapt your approach abroad. For example, you can perform research on how the market works in this new country, and what kind of product people are looking for. While changing your product is a drastic step, you may be able to catch great interest just by changing your marketing pitches.

    1. Make a plan
    2. Just like you need to understand the future market you will be operating in, you should also clearly envision and formulate your business plan in the long and short term. You can take notes from other competitors and how they brought their business to success, while also crafting your own approach and finding advantages to win a share of the market.

      1. Appealing to new audiences
      2. There are certainly risks to taking your business abroad, but there are also spectacular opportunities. For example, if you were not able to tap into certain demographics and social groups in your home country, this may be achievable in another one. Chances are that most of the new population will not be familiar with your brand, so you have the chance to create a whole new image and capture new clients.

        1. Keep expectations realistic
        2. As motivated as you may be to succeed in new territories, it will not happen overnight. Just remember the early days of your business, how much it has grown since then, and how long it took. You may be going abroad with more resources, a smarter business strategy, and all of the motivation in the world, but it will still take time to establish your brand and reach sustained growth.

          1. Hire good workers
          2. This is a handy tip for any business circumstance, but in the context of expanding internationally, you should hire good local workers. Naturally, you will some staff to travel to the new country and help get everything up and running, but finding local workers will incentivise them to build your business up and serve as a bridge between an international enterprise and a new culture.

            1. Don’t neglect the paperwork
            2. There is often a lot of work that goes into establishing a business even before the doors open, including getting the right permits, providing a bunch of financial documents, and undergoing lots of checks by the authorities. In order to prevent legal issues or delays, you can properly instruct your legal team to make all of the necessary preparations on demand, and preferably before you make a giant investment.
