How to get rid of Droopy Eyelids with Eyelid Surgery
What is
blepharoplasty?
With upper eyelids, the main component of the surgery is to
remove excess skin, but often a small amount of muscle, and sometimes some
underlying fat, is removed to optimize the result. With the lower eyelids, the
appearance of eye bags has more to do with bulging fat than excess skin, and
therefore the goal is to remove or redistribute this fat and in doing so reduce
the appearance of bags.
A frequently recommended solution to cosmetically alter a
drooping eyelid is a procedure known as blepharoplasty, which is often referred
to as an eyelid lift.
Procedure:
Before undergoing the procedure, the patient will undergo a
complete medical exam that includes an eye exam to determine their general
health. Photographs of the eyes are taken prior to the procedure to aid in
technique and planning, as well as to provide a basis from which to compare
long-term results.
Blepharoplasty/eyelid
surgery is an outpatient procedure performed in the comfort of the
treating physician's office with the use of local anesthesia to numb the
treatment area.
Once the patient is comfortable, the doctor will make a
small incision along the eyelid crease and carefully remove a predetermined
amount of muscle, fat, and skin tissue as needed.
The incision is then closed with fine sutures. Patients
undergoing the procedure on both the upper and lower lids will have the upper
lid treated first, followed by an incision just inside the lower lid using the
same technique.
Result:
Patients who choose to undergo blepharoplasty experience the
benefit of being able to return home soon after the procedure is complete. At
best, patients report minimal side effects associated with this treatment,
which can include minimal swelling, bruising, and swelling at the incision site
along with the possibility of temporary watery or blurry eyes.
Many of these symptoms are easily treated with
over-the-counter pain relievers, and most doctors recommend applying a cold
compress to the eyes for about 10 minutes a day for a week or two after the
procedure. Incision scars fade over time and are often reduced in appearance by
placing them within the eyelid crease.
Many patients see immediate and long-lasting results after
undergoing blepharoplasty,
while those with more severe drooping eyelids may prefer to undergo the
treatment multiple times to achieve the desired results. As an added benefit to
improving vision, eyelid lifts generally lead to a more youthful appearance for
many patients.
