How to Establish Good Relationships

by Lorraine Conaway C&C Wealth Strategies
This week we are talking about the Power of Networking and why it is very important to establish good relationships! According to dictionary.com, networking is defined as a “supportive system of sharing information and services among individuals and groups having a common interest.” It is very important to have strong networking skills because it can potentially help you establish good joint venture partnerships which can help grow your business! So what are some tips for developing your networking skills and identifying which joint venture relationships can be most advantageous for both you and the partner you are looking to work with?

1 - Be genuine. Keep in mind that networking is about being authentic, building trust and relationships. And beyond that, it is also seeing how you can help others. Networking is a give and take relationship. If you are simply networking to take, take, take, people will soon see this.
2 - Define clear goals. Figure out why you are networking so that you can narrow down which groups you would like to network with. This can potentially save you a great deal of time.
3 - Ask questions. When you are at the networking events, ask open-ended questions, meaning who, what, where, when and how questions, as opposed to those that can be answered by yes and no. This can open up discussion and it shows the listener that you are interested in what they are saying.
4 - Be clear. Have a clear understanding of what you do and why, for whom, and why it is special. Be able to CLEARLY articulate this information, quickly and to the point. If you are unclear or vague, people will quickly lose interest and it will be difficult to establish good relationships.
5 -  Follow Thru. Having good follow-thru is extremely important when you are given referrals. When people give you referrals, your actions are a reflection of them. Respect and honor that, and your referrals will grow. You never know what great opportunities can come out of a particular referral.
6 – Help others! Especially as your business start growing and picks up speed, remember to always give back. If there are people, such as mentors and contacts that helped you along the way, make sure you give back to the community when you are in a position to do so.

Scot Strategy

Scot Landborg, a wealth strategist from Conaway and Conaway, has tips on how to successfully network. It’s not always about converting the person you meet to become a customer. The big question to ask yourself is:  “Who do they know that can be my customer?” This way, you’re expanding your network circle to not just the person you just met but also to the people they know. Next, when you’re networking remember that the best way to get a referral is to give one first. It’s not always about you. So the next time you talk business with someone, try thinking “Who can I recommend to help this person?” Next, indirect interactions can be powerful at networking events. For example, this is what I do, let’s say you’re at an event, standing, talking, and mingling with people at the networking booths. Pick someone you want to talk to and “just happen” to be in the same food line as they are. Casually strike up a conversation. Find a group(s) that fits you. If you have a unique business, BNI can be a great place to network.  Why?  Because once you join one group you can visit the other clubs for no additional charge.  Another tip is to always try building your database.   Maybe you don’t meet an immediate customer from your networking, but by adding them to your database and by marketing to them later, maybe they become a client down the road.
