How to Enhance College Resume with Travel Experience

by Kristen White Blogger
Colleges are not interested in seeing how many different countries someone has been to or the number of times (or length) they have spent out of the country.  Applicants should be careful and avoid a superficial list of their international travel unless they have more substantial information to support it such as what they did, what the experience meant to them, how did it affect future decisions, etc.

One of the most important features universities are looking for in addition to good grades and high scores, is a well-rounded student that can see the world from more than just one perspective. When the applicant can show that traveling internationally has impacted their view on economics, humanitarian causes or global events than the experience becomes more relevant to the admissions process. Gap year programs abroad are a great way for high school graduates to make that last enhancement to their resume by working with an agency that can get them involved in various activities that translate to local community involvement. They occur during the summer and are specifically geared towards individuals who are in between high school and college and looking to enhance their resume with a meaningful interactive effort.

When looking at program options, it is important to find an activity that aligns with the desired degree program which shows commitment and a willingness to learn new things from a new point of view.  Another benefit of this experience that can enhance the college application and job resume is the ability to learn a new language and become bilingual.  This is a sought-after skill in many large organizations that work internationally and need employees that can effectively communicate with overseas partners in their native language.

Keep in mind that most high school students want to be committed by the time they graduate so to ensure that the college application looks its best early, it is a good idea to enroll in high school summer abroad programs. They are shorter than the full foreign exchange program so that students can spend their summers volunteering, staying with a host family, learning a new culture and immersing themselves to see the world from a different point of view. Whether participation takes place every summer or just once, the experience can provide excellent background to complete the admissions essay and the student an edge over the competition. Be sure to associate the travel with goals, well-thought out comments about relevant global situations and the impact that it had on you personally.

Traveling abroad through these programs is designed to empower the participant with a new perspective and enhance their skills as they see the world around them through different eyes. Visiting local tourist points, interacting with the community, working with peers to build or create something special and living with a family who has opened their home and hearts and understand how everyone is the same yet uniquely different based on their surroundings.  Go online and find the right agency to partner with and get the process started today to participate before or just after graduation.
