How To Deal With Female Pattern Baldness?
by Andrew Martin Health ConsultantAlmost
every female would have faced hair fall in their lives and how it feels is not
new to anyone. The pain of losing each hair strand is excruciating and females
often panic seeing their hair fall. There are many phases in a female’s life
with hormonal peak and downfalls including menstruation, pregnancy, post partum
and menopause. These phases offer many changes in one including hair loss.
Hair
loss is more impactful in females as compared to males as it is less socially
acceptable and majorly affects the well being and quality of life. It affects
psychological status negatively and lowers the self confidence and self esteem.
The
most important cause of hair loss is genetics which is referred as male or
female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. Female
pattern baldness is a genetic dysfunction that is hereditary and
successively transferred from maternal or paternal side. The other causes for
hair loss in females are thyroid disorders, hormonal changes and other systemic
diseases contributing hair loss. In addition to these caused for hair loss,
there are multiple contributing factors for hair loss including hot tools and
styling chemicals, stress, changed lifestyle and increased pollution.
To
get rid of the hair loss and baldness people look for natural remedies as
suggested by dear ones and advertized commercially claiming to cease hair loss.
But frankly speaking there is no remedy developed by now which can resolve
genetic hair loss. Hair transplant is the only permanent solution of hair loss
which is intended to restore the hairs in the bald area.
Hair
transplant in earlier decades were performed with primitive techniques so was
not a very competent procedure. But presently hair transplant had come a long
way and recent innovations and latest technology has made it possible to
achieve best aesthetic results by this procedure.
Pattern of hair loss in
female pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia
Hair
loss in female pattern baldness is distinct from the male hair loss pattern and
invlolves central thinning of hairs. This area is majorly involved in hair loss
as it constitutes majorly androgen sensitive hair follicles as contains
receptors to bind androgen hormone metabolites. These hair follicles under the
influence of androgens undergo central thinning or miniaturization ultimately
leading to hair loss. The hair follicles from back and side of the head
(occipital area) possess hair follicles which are androgen resistant and are
not influenced by genetic hair loss. The resistance towards androgens makes
them lasts for lifetime. The genetic constituent of hairs lies at the
follicular tip which when transferred anywhere possesses the characteristics of
the follicle and not the scalp. Therefore,
when these hair follicles are transferred at the androgen prone area they still
stays resistant to the hormone and does not undergo thinning and hair
loss.
Seeing
a Doctor
Females
are known to be more worried about their looks and seek doctor’s advice
preferably in initial stages as compared to males which usually neglects the
early signs of hair loss. Possibly you might have temporary hair loss but
consulting a doctor could be beneficial in early treatment interventions. In
the primary consultation, doctor can assess the cause of your hair loss and recommend
you the appropriate treatment options. Post assessment of the cause and stage
of baldness patient’s candidature for medication or hair transplant cosmetic
surgery is decided.
How it is treated?
Females
tend to spend plenty on remedies for hair loss including shampoos, lotions and
serums. But external application of these cosmetic products does not offer
major benefit. The treatment modalities opted for management of female hair
loss includes:
Medications:
If
the hair loss and central thinning is in its initial stage medications are
usually advised to the patient after assuring the cause of hair loss. The well
known medications recommended for hair loss solution include:
1. Minoxidil (Rogaine): These
are over the counter lotions available in the market intending to slower the
progression of hair loss and thickening of hairs. The mechanism of this
medication lies in increasing the growth rate of hairs by increasing the blood
flow in the respective area.
2. Finasteride: These
are prescribed medications which are orally administered. They tend to reduce
the amount of DHT hormone ultimately leading to slower progression of hair loss
and increasing the growth rate of hairs.
These
medications often used commonly for hair loss does not guarantee the positive results.
It is possible that the results relapse after taking the medications.
Therefore, it cannot be suggested as permanent treatment option for hair loss.
Hair transplant
cosmetic procedure for female pattern baldness:
Hair
transplant cosmetic surgery is the only treatment modality intended to deliver
permanent results with natural look. This procedure is restorative and employs transfer
of the hair follicles from donor area opted based on the density of hairs to
the recipient bald area. It is performed using 2 primary techniques: FUT and
FUE hair transplanted technique which are differentiated based on the graft
harvesting technique. The techniques are opted based on the number of follicular
grafts required to restore the bald area. Extensive hair loss patients are
advised for combination technique of FUT +FUE which could successfully retrieve
more than 4000 hair grafts.
In female hair
transplant cosmetic surgery performing graft harvesting in either technique is
similar as male hair transplant: FUT and FUE hair transplant. But female hair
transplant has certain distinct feature and methods as shaving of head is
completely avoided in any of the step of the procedure. The hair follicles are carefully
implanted in micro slits prepared by the surgeon under higher magnification
without damaging the existing adjacent hair follicles. Hair transplant in
females is bit complicated as aesthetic demands of hairline design is crucial. The receded line and temporal triangles are
covered in females unlike males. Including, the expenses for female hair
transplant are bit more as compared to male hair transplant as excellent
expertise of the surgeon is mandatory for successful aesthetic outcomes.
Medispa hair
transplant centre is well known for performing hair transplant in both men and
women. Dr Suneet Soni has successfully delivered 100% assured results to many
female patients for hair transplant in Jaipur and
Delhi. Dr Suneet Soni (MCh Plastic surgeon), founder of “medispa centre” is
pioneer in performing FUT, FUE and combination technique with an experience of
more than 5000 patients. His surgical skills are undoubtedly astounding but
what makes him unique is his artistic vision for designing hairline.
