How to Create a Path to Homeschool Graduation

by Kristen White Blogger

As with any important step, there is a process to get to graduation, it isn’t something that you can wait to think about until the 12th grade. Indeed, parents need to think about this event when their kids are still in elementary school and they are trying to choose a quality-backed homeschool program. The entire education process is designed to build on the information taught in each grade so an effective curriculum should be at the top of the priority list as well as availability of certified teachers to help students working online either part or full-time.

High school is a critical time period and when you enroll in best homeschool online program then a completed ‘path to graduation’ plan should be standard issue for every rising 9th grader. This plan is developed between the school counselor and the students after discussing their interests, future plans and hobbies. The homeschool program should offer a wide range of NCAA-approved courses, standard and honors options for college prep and electives that cover technology, music/arts, finance/business and hands-on skill development. High schoolers have the ability to choose classes that are both interesting to them and will help them meet their credit requirements for graduation.

In fact, the purpose of the ‘path to graduation’ is to give students and their parents a blueprint or plan for each year starting in 9th grade. This way the family can review the requirements, pre-requisites and load for each semester to ensure it works with the family dynamics. Every student must graduate with a specific number of credits in each of the core classes and a number of elective credits which is easy to see with this resource as everything is listed out for each year. Included in this plan are recommended tests such as the SAT and ACT which are important to college admissions, annual Stanford Achievement Testing for grades K-11,  and additional opportunities that can help students earn the required credits for landing scholarships. Dual enrollment is another track offered by the top online homeschool programs and this would also be incorporated into the ‘path to graduation’ if the student selected this and qualified to participate. Students should have the ability to adjust the plan if they change their mind about what they want to do or want to broaden their horizons with electives that are outside their comfort zone.

Parents can help prepare their student for a successful high school term by talking with them about their goals before they reach 9th grade and helping them develop good study habits with online learning. The first step is to start looking for Christian school online that has this unique tool and talk with the admissions staff to see how to get enrolled. Even if the child is still in elementary or even kindergarten, it is never too early to prepare for the future and a solid foundation is an important piece that cannot be overlooked or understated. Enjoy the year leading up to graduation by having everything in order and checked off because you and the student had a great partner in a quality backed online homeschool program.
