How to Convert a CD Burner to a DVD Burner
CD burners differ from regular CD players in that they are capable of creating homemade CDs using blank discs. The burning capabilities are limited, however, to CDs only and will need an upgrade in order to burn DVDs. They do not have the capability of reading DVDs unless it is a combo drive. The only way to convert to a DVD burner is to replace the drive

Instructions

Read your PC's documentation to find out if you have an IDE or SATA drive. Alternatively, open the side case by removing the four screws from the back. Look at the back of the CD drive; if the cable is thin, short and red, it is SATA. If the drive is IDE and your motherboard has available SATA ports, consider upgrading to SATA for faster transfer speeds.

Disconnect the power cord from the wall, and press the power button. This discharges electrical buildup that remains after the cord is removed.

Open the case as described in Step 1 and remove the screws on either side of the old drive. There will be at least two, maybe more.

Pull out any cables connected to the back of the drive.

Use one hand to push firmly on the rear of the drive and push it out through the front. Steady the drive with the other hand and slide it out.

Remove the new drive from its packaging and push it through the hole in front of the computer. The ridges on the side of the case will stop it from going completely through.

Secure it with the screws you removed earlier and plug the cables back in.

 8 


Reattach the case, plug in the power cord and start the computer. The drive will be detected by Windows automatically
