The sofa is maybe the most important piece of furniture at home. You should choose it carefully, because there are thousands of sofas in different colours and made by different materials. So, before you go to the furniture market, you should have an idea what kind of couch do you want.

Buying a leather sofa, for example, is a big home investment. It's quite expensive, but if you can afford it, than go for it. When you are in the market, there are few things to watch before you buy the sofa:

  • Scratch the sofa with your fingernail. If it leaves a mark, don't buy it – it's a sign of bad quality
  • The leather sofa shouldn't be very soft. If it is, it won't last long

After you find the perfect couch and take it to your home, you should take care of it. First of all don't put it on a direct sunlight. And when you decide to clean it, it's good to follow these steps:

1. Clean the sofa with a vacuum cleaner

Use the vacuum cleaner to remove the dust from your couch. Make it carefully, so you don't scratch the leather with the plastic or metal piece of the tool.

2. Use a mild soap

If your leather sofa doesn't have spots on it, you can clean it with soap. Put some soap on a towel and scrub the leather surface, but not too hard. It'll just push the dirt deep into the sofa and can cause damage.

3. Or a leather cleaner

If you have a heavy spot on your sofa, it's better to buy a special leather cleaner. There are a lot of leather types, so there are also a lot of cleaning detergents. You can buy a few and try it on different pieces of your sofa. In this way you can find the one the suits your couch best. No matter which detergent you choose, you should apply it on the leather with a damp, not wet towel.

4. NOT with vinegar or baking soda

I've read in many cleaning articles and posts that vinegar and baking soda are the perfect natural cleaners for almost everything. Yes, but not for leather sofas. They may work, but if they don't you risk to ruin your sofa. And it's quite expensive, so don't take this risk.

5. Dry it well

I don't recommend you to treat the leather couch with water at all. But you can't apply the cleaning detergent on a completely dry rag. So, the sofa will get a little wet. Dry it with a clean tower carefully after the cleaning procedure.

If you are careful, you can clean you leather sofa on your own. But if you are not sure you can treat it proper or you don't want to risk ruin it, it's better to hire a sofa clean company. The experts will treat your coach faster and better than you and it will be like brand new again.
