How to choose the right size yoga ball

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

Sometimes a yoga ball is called a training ball, exercise ball, stability ball or Swiss ball. It is made of plastic and elastic vinyl, is full of air, and most of them are resistant. Using a yoga ball, instead of exercising on a flat surface, forces the body to respond to its instability. This requires additional balance, which employs more muscles in the body. Choose the correct size of yoga ball to get the most out of your workout or exercise routine. To get more tips follow this yoga ball chairs buying guide.

Steps

Measure your height. When sitting on the ball, your knees should be at a right angle with your feet facing forward. Stand in front of a wall without shoes, and with your feet resting between the floor and the wall. Use a pencil to mark the place where the top of your head reaches. Use a tape measure to get an exact measure of your height.

Choose a ball that suits your height. Use your measurement to get a yoga ball in an appropriate size.

  • If you measure 1.53 cm or less, you will need a 45 cm ball.

  • If you measure from 1.55 cm to 1.70 cm, try a 55 cm ball.

  • Get a 65 cm ball if you measure between 1.73 cm and 1.85 cm.

  • If you measure 1.88 cm or more, you will need a ball that measures 75 cm.

If you have back problems, long legs, or problems stretching and doing yoga exercises, then choose a larger ball.

If you plan to use it instead of an office chair and your desk measures between 74 to 76 cm, get a 65 cm ball. Since the ball deflates when you sit on it, select one that has a diameter 10 cm larger than the height of the chair you are replacing.

Consider the pressure of the ball. At its maximum diameter, a yoga ball is very firm. The firmer the ball is, the more difficult yoga and exercise will be.

Try yoga balls in different sizes before deciding. Sit on top of the ball with your thighs parallel to the ground, and see if your hips and knees are bent at 90 degrees.

Tips

  • If you buy a yoga ball that is not inflated, carefully follow the inflation instructions to avoid injury.

  • If you are new to exercising with a yoga ball, start with a slightly deflated ball, and make it firmer as you gain confidence and experience.
