How to choose the generator that I need?

by TM Maria Be a king in your own kingdom

At the time of buying a generator, also called a generator, we have many doubts, among so many brands, models, versions and powers it is difficult to know what is the right generator for us and what equipment we really need to buy.

In this post we want to help you make the right purchase decision by explaining in a simple and summarized way what you should keep in mind when buying the best generator.

What are you going to use the generator for?

The first thing you should be clear about is that you are going to use the generator. Mainly there are two types of generators, those that are inverters and those that are not. The main difference is that inverter generators are used to power electronic equipment that is more delicate, for example, televisions, computers, etc., since they are equipment that requires a quality current, without voltage peaks or alterations in the supply. You must bear in mind that with an inverter generator you will not be able to feed, for example, a drill, a concrete mixer or any other machine or tool of high inductive capacity.

For all other applications, for example in machines and tools, a normal generator is what we need.

In summary, depending on what we need to feed we have:

Inverter generator:

·        Televisions

·        Computers

·        Radios

·        Illumination.

·        Etc.

Generator:

·        Grinders

·        Vacuum cleaners

·        Mower.

·        Concrete mixers

·        Etc.

What power do I need the generator?

Once you have chosen the type of generator you need, you must determine the power.

In a general way you can consider that the power you need from a generator must be equal to the sum of the powers of all the devices that you are going to connect to the generator and that you are going to operate at the same time. However, it is very important to bear in mind that some devices require a starting power that is higher than the actual operating power. This is what is known as minimum required power (PMR) and is the factor between the starting power and the operating power. Normally you should find this value on the identification plate of the team but here we give some guidance examples.

It is also important to always consider a margin of safety so that the generator does not always work at 100% of its capacity, thereby guaranteeing a much longer useful life, although normally this safety margin is already given by the same PMR.

Petrol or diesel?

With the motors of the generators we have something very similar that with the motors of the cars, it goes a little depending on the preferences of each one. Normally diesel generators have a higher autonomy than gasoline generators, on the contrary they are more noises. Diesel engines usually have a longer service life than gasoline engines, but they also have a higher price. Normally and for simple applications, a gasoline generator is sufficient.

Other aspects to consider?

You must bear in mind that the generated ones are motors and that they produce noise, if you are going to use the generator to power your house or business it is important to think of a soundproof generator to avoid annoying noises as much as possible; If you are going to work in the field or in a construction site then you can use one of open chassis.

Another important aspect is to think if the generator will be fixed in one place or if you are going to transport it, from 20-30 Kgs it is interesting to buy a generator that has wheels to facilitate its transfer.
