What do you wish for in your holiday? A rural setting full of character and charm? Outdoor activities like riding, cycling, walking, and fishing? Agricultural shows, village fetes, real ale pubs and farm shops? Somewhere to chill out with friends, have fun with the family, even celebrate your honeymoon? A country cottage holiday checks all of the above boxes, whatever the time of year!

Springtime in country cottages conjures up images of cherry trees laden with pale pink blossom, flower-scented meadows, the lambs frolicking on the hillsides and pleasantly mild temperatures for enjoying the 'amazing outdoors'. Summer brings with it a lot more daylight to sample even more, including alfresco suppers in your country cottage garden and evening walks with your four-legged friend. As autumn approaches, the great British harvest arrives with pears, apples, and other delicious goodies ripe and ready to relish at an array of local fests. Come winter, country cottages could be a place to relax over the festive season, away from the sofa sales and crowds! Here are a few tips to help you choose country cottages for a perfect holiday in the UK.

• Watch your budget! Taking a break in England is often thought of as the cheaper option, but with more and more country cottages entering the rental market, it's easy to overspend!  Also, bear in mind the petrol costs for the journey getting to your destination.

• Country cottages are available for rent in most parts of the UK. Once you have decided on your location, you must start looking at other details. Look for how private and isolated a retreat can the cottages offer you and the surrounding neighbourhood.

• Decide on the size of the cottage. Think about the number of bedrooms and restrooms you'll need and check whether any of the beds can double as sofa beds.  Is it practical for a member of your troop to sleep in the lounge?

• Be prepared for traffic jams if you're travelling away from the city the in peak season, get directions to the property and don't forget your breakdown kit.

• Country cottages are generally self-catering. Some cottages may come with large, well equipped kitchens while others will have only a kitchen corner or kitchenette. You should always have enough utensils for the maximum number of people that can occupy the cottage, but if you are planning on a lot of cooking, then it is best to inquire about the facilities. The larger the cottage, the greater your chances of a well-equipped kitchen.  Remember to carry some basic supplies with you so you don't have a look for a supermarket as soon as you arrive.

• Some cottages have specific days of the week to check-in and checkout. So, ensure this fits in with your plans - if you're looking for a 10 day holiday at a property that only allows 7 or 14 day bookings, it will not work out.

• Finally, decide the date of your holiday.  The general holidays obviously book up the quickest so book in advance to get the accommodation and cottage you want - good cottages often book up a year in advance by repeat holiday makers!

Use the above tips to find the best country cottages and make memories that last a lifetime!
