My son wanted me to take him to the store to buy a baseball glove for him. He was excited about playing his first junior league game the coming weekend and had been practicing for weeks. The inexpensive glove that I had previously bought for him didn’t fare too well.

However, this time around I decided to do some research before making the purchase. I knew that not only does the glove help enhance your game it also boosts your confidence like nothing ever can.

There are a number of factors to consider while choosing a good baseball glove. The main concern is undoubtedly the durability of the glove. This is because the player is going to be using it for games and lengthy practices. Following are some important features of the glove which should be kept in mind:

Robustness:

Baseball gloves are commonly made using leather, vinyl or both. Vinyl gloves are cheaper as compared to leather. But leather is more durable and generally lasts for a couple of years.

Dimensions:

It has to be a size that properly fits your hand. Baseball gloves range in sizes from 8 to 15 inches. It is advised that you try on a couple of different sizes before settling down for one size. Trying it on before buying helps you get accustomed to the feel of the glove and helps you choose the one that fits in the best.  Never go for a baseball glove that doesn’t fit you properly.

Hand Preference:

Gloves are made for both right and left hand for baseball throwers. Choose a glove according to the hand you use for day to day work or the one you feel comfortable using.

Netting:

Choose the netting depending on where you would play: infield, outfield or pitching. Each one has a different glove, so choose depending upon the position in the team. Infielders do well with small to medium sized gloves, outfielders use a bigger size in order to retrieve and release faster.

Catcher’s mitts:

These are the one sporting a unique design. They also require a little more protection because of the catcher’s place in the team. It is much stronger than a regular glove and has closed webbings.

Multipurpose:

Depending upon the position in the team, it is good to choose a multipurpose glove to accommodate numerous positions and uses.
