How to Buy the Right Bonsai Pots

by Seller Ben Buisness

It is hard to overemphasize the need to buy the right bonsai pots, because if you choose the right pot, it will allow the tree to grow and reach its maximum potential. The pot plays such an important part in the growth and cultivation of your bonsai – and it is inexpensive – there is no reason not to buy the best one available.

Pot Size

The depth of the pot needs to be equivalent to the trunk’s diameter which is just over the soil level. If it is an oval rectangle pot, the length has to be 2/3 of the tree’s height,  and if the pot is round the pot diameter needs to be a third of the tree’s height. If your bonsai has a wide canopy, the pot has to be wider, albeit a bit shallower.

Pot Shape

Rectangular pots are ideal for big deciduous trees and coniferous species with a large nebari, a wide base and a conspicuous taper. Rectangular pots are best for masculine trees as it conveys an image of strength.

Oval wholesale flower pots are more appropriate for deciduous trees and dump style bonsai. Generally speaking, the less the taper the more feminine the appearance is, and sinuous curves adds to the feminine appearance. Round pots are most suitable for literati/bunjin trees, and these pots are often used on sinuously curved or tall, straight trees with minimal tapering. As a rule, shallow round pots are shallow.

The Color

The color and texture of the pot has a significant effect on the tree’s appearance so you need to think about this carefully too. All bonsai trees are unique, so choose a color / texture that highlight the variations on your tree. For instance, a brown or sun glazed pot compliments the look of a juniper.

A masculine pot with sharp corners and heavy base should have a rough texture, and it will look good with thick trunked pines. If your bonsai has a rough bark, as is the case when it comes to coniferous trees, you’ll want a rusty or dark brown texture.

Buying a bonsai, just like orchid pots, requires thought and patience. There are a lot of factors that have to be taken into account, but those mentioned above are the most important. It might seem like a lot of work but this is going to pay off in the end as your bonsai reaches its full potential.
