How to Build a Shadow Box Wood Fence

by Kevin Smith Author

It has been said that a good fence makes for good neighbors. And the better looking the fence, the happier the neighbors. One of the easiest types of backyard fence to build is a wood fence. You can go basic, or get creative with a wood fence in Tampa, FL. One popular fence style is a shadow box wood fence. A shadowbox wood fence has pickets on alternating sides. It offers some privacy, although at an angle you can see through the fence. A solid fence has pickets edge to edge for complete privacy.

Step 1 – First, check with your city or homeowners association to make sure you can fence in your property and learn what types of fences are allowed. Next, talk with the neighbors who will share the fence. You don’t need their permission, but it would be nice to have their buy in. You may also want to agree to the property line before you start to build. If you can spare a few inches, build the fence on your side of the property line.

Step 2 – Take a piece of graph paper and draw the fence to scale with posts and rails. This will be helpful with neighbors in giving them an idea of what the fence will look like. You will need a drawing if you need to apply for a permit or approval.

Step 3 – To begin drive in stakes and attach the stakes with construction string. Following your property line stake out the perimeter of your yard. This will give you the outline of where the fence will go. At each corner, and every eight feet in between, dig a hole 18 inches deep/12 inches wide. This is where you will pour cement and set the 4 by 4-inch posts. The cement will ensure your fence does not wobble.

Step 4 – With the holes dug, place the posts in the hole and secure with wet cement. Mix just enough cement to fill one or two holes. If you mix too much cement it will dry before you have a chance to use it. With a level to make sure the posts are perfectly upright. Stake the posts in that level position and wait for the cement to dry.

Step 5 – With all the fence posts in place, attach a top and bottom rail. Then attach the fence slats on alternating sides of the rails with nails or screws. Use a level to make sure the slats are perfectly up and down. Work your way around the posts and you’ll have a great looking wood fence in Tampa, FL, in a matter of no time.
