Are you spending a lot of time at the gym without getting much benefit from it? Many people find that they are not losing the weight that they expect on a fitness regime, and it is common for this disappointed people to leave their exercise classes, and generally give up on losing weight and trying keeping fit. With a looming obesity crisis, it is in everyone's interest to keep trying to lose weight and stay fit, and many health clubs will try to help you stay on course with your regime. One thing which most clubs will not tell you, however, is that much of your fitness hour is being lost through wasting time.  If you don't spend the full hour exercising as much as possible, then you will never succeed in losing weight.

Not increasing intensity

One of the biggest time-wasters is doing a repetitive strength-training exercise with weights which are just too light. If you are exercising to increase strength, then you need to be challenging your muscles every time. Yet all too often, personal trainers find that people are doing far too many repetitions, and not enough heavy work. Although you might be able to do 50+ bicep curls, what you are building is stamina, not strength. Also, you are wasting time on that many repetitions. 10 reps with a larger weight will be quicker, and will target your strength, not endurance.

  Getting away with bad form

If you have been learning to lift weights or exercise on your own, moving to the gym can be a shock. Many people who exercise on their own can start to suffer from bad form, a way of exercising which is usually easier, but which increases your chances of injury, and also targets the wrong muscles. If you are wasting your time doing masses of repetitions with poor form, you aren't likely to be focused upon the right muscles, and bad form is always a waste of time. If you have been doing it wrong for too long, then you may find it hard to move into the right form. Start by taking some Casuarina Pilates classes, as these can really help you to boost core strength and help with posture, which can allow you to improve your form naturally. Secondly, take a few sessions with a personal trainer. They can point out bad form, and help you to adjust your routine in order to improve your strength-building.
